Backup power supplies--service life?

The key to life is brief exercise of the batteries, if you discharge them heavily, either thru hard load or run them nearly flat. Then you can suffer a lot higher failure rate of units and batterys. Most of our units are gen-set backed, they don't hold the load long, if the gens do their thing. Our Cummins units sometimes make you wonder, whats next to quit? They seem to have alot of fuel inj. pump problems lately?

So far my Onan/Cummins have been fine... every so often I will changed out a block heater... that's about it. the newest one is 1995.

Do you think the injector problems are fuel related?

This sounds pretty close, we are going with 4 years replacements. Noticed when China took over production then Life was shorter. Everybody has afew that are exceptional lifed. Then some won't go a year. My exp. with APC, usually can stand one change, then it is a dice shoot...12v-7ah=$19.00 to39.00 here for gell cell and flame resistant..

OP here, that may be the reason my 13 year old APC unit has lasted so long...better build quality. BTW, none of our UPS batteries ever gets run down...I use them mainly for computers and electronics to prevent data loss when we have a power glitch...we lose power three to four times a month for only a second or two.
