Backwards running woods RFM?

Well, I think Ive done it now.I had a friend call me from an auction to tell me about a woods 48 inch rfm. I told him if it was decent bid on it for me as I was working.Got mower for a reasonable price but got it home and found a suprise.Mower has an 18 pline pto shaft and is set up to run counter clockwise.It says run with satoh and yanmar 135 and 155 do all these run a backwards pto or is the mower convertable with different blades and pto adapter? It is a woods RM48 thanks Jason

I don't believe the Yanmar models 135 & 155, or Satoh run backwards. If the RFM is fine spline it must be for a different model, as the above models are 1 3/8" 6 spline standard.

The Yanmars don't run backwards, but some of the small Satohs, Mitsubishis, and I heard that there were a couple of small Kubotas that way. I have had one of the Mitsubishis and one Satoh that were 18 spline wrong direction PTO'd. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

It has a woods decal on it that says run Satoh Beaver and Kubota in 2nd pto speed 800-1000 rpm and Yanmar 135,155 at 1000 rpm thats why I thouhgt it might be convertable to standard pto because the yanmars are american models.Oh well, if anyone could find an oddball mower it would be me Thanks Jason /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You might want to call Woods and see what they say.

Is this a straight gear box job.. or something with belts.. Depending on belt setup you may be able to flip the belt end ont he drive pulley, thus reversing direction.. now.. that creates other issues with blade direction, and if there is an ORC installed ont he blade spindle ( like on some IH belly mowers ).

The mower has a belt drive with the large pulley run directly by the pto shaft.I went on woods web sight and found manuals listed for model RM48 with two digits after YM,JD and SB mine says SB which I believe is for Satoh Beaver.Tomorrow I have to call Woods and find if it can be changed to be set up for JD or Ym with standard PTO size and direction.Have to call becuse now I blew up my email and it doesnt work or maybe I have to type my question to Woods counterclockwise /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I replied on the Mitsubishi/Satoh forum. And I think there was a Yanmar and maybe even a Kubota with backwards PTO, but that was a long time ago.

Soundguy, there ain't no flippin the belt on this thing. You have to have a diagram with step 1, step 2 .... just to put this belt on. It's a B-124 belt if anyone wants to know.

Nope!, it's not just you. I got an auction RFM from a guy that has reverse rotation (but no goofy PTO). I found some Walker blades that had the cutting edge on the "wrong" side. After a bunch of grinding and fitting-up of the blades, it cuts good and I'm still at less than half the price of a new RFM. ...
