How many of you out here have had trouble with the engines in the L2900 or L3010 , the oil plug falling out and oil dropps on the front axle and oil pressure dropping out taking the block, crank, pistons out and spinning the crank bearing out of it, the motor didn't even have 1300 hrs on it?????????

You are kidding, right?
Go sue whoever changed the crankcase oil the last time if you need a scapegoat.
If that plug stayed in the oilpan for the first 1200+ hours, when properly installed, it would still be there.

Sounds like someone pulled a very dirty trick on you.

I work with someone that had the oil filter fall off after they had a quick lube place changed the oil on a car, but they caught it before the engine was ruined. It does happen, but I'd say who ever changed the oil either striped out the drain plug or didn't tighten it.

This seems like a troll thread attempt but I did have a quick change place leave the cap off my engine on a car once. The entire engine compartment was covered with oil. I took it back and had them clean it. What I didn't know was that they had put the wrong drain plug back in (from another car) and mangled the treads. Nice place. It always leaked after that and you had to remember to check it and I think it contributed to the early demise of the engine ( seized head).

Yes - you can actually screw up an oil change, hard to believe

Had my oil plug come out on a L48 plowing last winter.....Yikes! I noticed right away and shut down. Now I check them every so often and try to use lock tight. I change my own oils too. The other side is when people crank the nut down too tight and that can be a problem too.

Obvious design flaw. Drain plug should be on top of engine, where it can't fall out.

That would keep it from falling out!

This is not a drain plug or filter problem it is a port they drill and open up to drill all the oil sump hole in the block then they put a freeze plug inthe hole in the left front of the block and it fell out and , this engine was not a rebuilt engine i have owned this tractor from day one new.

If you hadn't done such a colassally bad job of articulating the facts in your first post, the responses would have been very different.

No, I have never heard of that happening.
I believe it could.
If you are out of warranty, I expect it will be at your expense.

tractor man down - you are saying that a bolt on the bottom of the engine block, that is not the drain plug, fell out and drained a lot of oil? Seems like that could happen, but I don't have any idea.

I think my manual says to check the fluids every time before using the tractor. I never do that, does anyone else?

On the 3710 block there is a rubber plug about an inch in diameter and a couple inches long that fits into a "fill hole" (as best I can describe it), at the left front bottom of the block. After several years or so, this plug seems to fit loosely, especially in the winter with colder temps.

Mine popped out the other day, but we noticed it right away, shut the tractor down and cleaned it up. I checked the oil and it was only down about a quart (out of 2 gallons).

I took some brake cleaner and cleaned off the oil from the plug, wrapped a couple turns of electrical tape around it and pushed it back in. it now fits snug.

I am going to come up with a more permanent redesign of this piece as I can see it failing at a point where I don't notice it until it is way too late.

really bad friggin design.............REALLY BAD.

The electric tape idea is fine in the short run but it is just a rubber glove to fix a leaking fountain pen. That part can't be all that expensive. I suggest you replace it.

/ Bad engine #18
at a minimum..........I will replace it. I also intend to design a mechanical fastener to keep it in place.

/ Bad engine #19
that is a crappy design. Can you thread it and put a bolt in it next oil change?

1 inch ID hole......... I am going to rig something such that that **** plug stays put.

I dunno who designed it that way, but they need a swift kick in the pills!
