Bad gas?

Yes! My brother (shade tree mechanic) had never heard of it either. He was gonna help me "rebuild" the carb. This was cheaper AND easier. I did learn how to remove/reinstall a carb, so win-win.

You're certainly smarter than me! My small engine repair shop has one that they use to clean those tiny carburetors. So - I decided to buy one from HF and do my own. Bonk! They may work for some people, but for me, I still had to disassemble the carb completely then use the ultrasonic cleaner.

Honestly, I could not tell you that the ultrasonic cleaner did one single thing for me... other than lighten my wallet of $80 to HF. But - if you'd like to buy a slightly used one at a very reasonable price - just ping me :)

Soaking the carb overnight in carburetor cleaner, then blowing it out with an air hose is the old tried and true method.

I imagine the dealer has a heavier duty model but I can ask him if you're interested. Hmm, I see in the reviews of the HF model, folks do say it cleaned carbs. ?

GWWT - post #37 - talking about the dealer putting your carb in an ultrasonic cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaner is small tub sitting in small package - about size of your normal household toaster. The tub is filled with some form of water soluble cleaning solution. Chuck the part in the tub of cleaning solution - turn on the machine. Makes a humming noise - that's the ultrasonic sound waves.

I worked at a place that had a fairly large ultrasonic cleaner. Tub was 1' by 2' by about 10" deep. It was used to clean tooling. Finally had to have a meeting with all the guys RE - the ultrasonic cleaner.

You will be charged $5/hour to have "whatever" cleaned in the ultrasonic unit. There was a backlog of guys waiting to have their carb parts cleaned. An ultrasonic does a great job of cleaning parts. The $5 supposedly paid for all the cleaning solution being used.

I have found a mix that seems to work for me (YMMV), Seafoam and Lucas Injector cleaner. I put a measured amount (about a squirt of Lucas, bit of Seafoam) and run it. I have used both over the years, but starting in about 2010, I found this mix works on what I have.

Problem with the HF model is that it has a 5 minute built in timer. It hardly has time to warm up in 5 minutes. And for extended cleaning, one has to stand there and punch 'start' every 5 minutes. Dumb feature.
