Well, this week it got to the point where the machine wouldn't run. It would flood out regardless of level in the gas tank. I decided to say F Subaru and their service and pulled the carb. Float and needle were both fine. Narrowed it down to the O-ring between float assembly and fuel-in from top of carb. The ring seemed too small and was not consistent. Went to Autozone and got the o-ring assortment that are made of vitrile or something like that (fuel resistant). I picked a winner, installed, and reassembled. Machine runs like it's ready for battle. WAY better than even when I first brought the machine home. It even got rid of the run-on and backfire when I shut the machine off. It also fires up without hesitation where before it was hit or miss. I'm back to happy again. Carry on.

One of my small equipment dealers told me that Subaru is the number one engine in Japan. We were discussing how everyone in the US wants a Honda, but he claimed that in Japan Subaru was the go to engine. I researched them quite a bit, and found they are similar to most brands, with both good and not-so-good products. Since Honda is used more here, replacement parts are also more available.

Honda is not immune to such assembly problems. One of the more frequent problems reported with Honda's flagship motorcycle, the GL1800, has been a poorly seated "O" ring at the input of the final drive of this shaft driven bike. This causes a persistent drip of stinky gear oil and Honda has been reported by some owners to be reluctant to repair under warranty and repair time is prolonged when they do. Still, a great product. It is good the OP was able to repair the flaw on his own.

In case anyone has a similar issue, the o-ring in question is #22 in the diagram (not exact diagram but pretty darn close to what I have). O-ring I used as a replacement came in a multi-pack from Autozone for $6.99.

I believe I read somewhere that Subaru are discontinuing production of small-engines and stepping out of this market shortly.

I'll dig around my sources and post back shortly.

Subaru To Exit Engine And Power Products Business | Diesel Progress North American | Diesel Progress International

Winding down as of Sept 2017.

This is the sad truth of the modern market:

" ... Low-cost country production with lower priced and lower quality products are accepted by customers as the market standard. FHI, too, has made efforts to lower its productç—´ cost without sacrificing quality, such as by adding production capacity in China and so on. Despite such efforts, it is very hard to foresee our business growth in the industrial products business. " ...

> In North America, that means the end of the Subaru Industrial Power Products business operated by Robin America, Lake Zurich, Ill.

And Subaru exited by selling off their Industrial Power products group to Yamaha. Fuji stopping making subaru engines in Sept 2017 = Yamaha start making Subaru engines

Confirmed with Terry, they are all 100% Kohler now. They couldn't get the engines any more. They will be offering a refit kit in the future for people should their Subaru go down, they can be fitted with the Kohler. The Kohlers are more expensive though.

I told him about the O-ring issue and solution since he wanted me to update him on what happened. He's going to keep an eye out for that with future service work and replace the flat ring with the rounded one and that may explain some people's issues.
