I ordered the 60" quick connect blade (snow plow) and Pallet forks for my new 1870. I'm finding that these attachments extend so far beyond where the FEL bucket is that it makes the Tractor rear wheels almost come off the ground. Even before I load the forks. Do I just get a ballast box or can I use a make shift ballast system cheaper?

Thinking of just putting a tow hitch with a rack and sand bags like the following... Quick-On Receiver Hitch Carry-On Trailer Heavy-Duty Hitch Packer, 2 in. x 6 in. - For Life Out Here

There are a number of options for counter weight. Ballast box is good. A tiller or other heavy implement on the 3pth.
Some have made weights out of concrete and steel. Your imagination is the limit.

One solution would be a steel frame ballast box, filled with whatever. I had some heavy rip-rap rock, which adds about 400 lbs if I fill it up. Easy to empty or remove the whole box, if wanted. Made for a handy chain carrier, too.

I like ballast box because it is compact and heavy. This one filled with cement weighs 1250#. Philip.

I made one out of a bucket (free). a piece of black pipe, rocks, 6 bags of concrete and some scrap angle iron. I embedded a 2" reciever i had lying around in the back so I could move my trailers around. It weighs 650 lbs.DSC_4180.JPG

It's not pretty but it works and there is room in top for tools, chains or more rocks. It works much better than my box blade which only weighs about 350 lbs.

Maybe another solution is to mount a rear blade on the back. You could modify the blade to hold a couple of cement blocks. This way you could plow both ways and reverse the back blade for doing paths over the lawn or dirt areas without doing too much damage.

the OEM ballast box for the BX is inexpensive and just works.
