Bandaid for Gasoline Spout?

I have an ancient 1-Gal. metal gas can I use for mixed fuel for small engines. It has a handy flexible (rubber, plastic?) spout with a plug on the end and a nice big opening for mixing oil and fuel. No doubt no longer legal.

Trouble is some critter chewed a hole in the spout. I don't find anything as handy currently offered. It looks like it could be fixed with a tight wrap of tape. Is there any sort of tape that would withstand gasoline?

How about the self sealing silicon based tapes? According to their info it is chemical resistant.

Plain old electrical tape has made split gas spouts usable for me

I used self-vulcanising tape whilst in the Navy... a few wraps of that would fix your problem IMHO.

Thanks to all that responded. I tried the electrical tape since I had that on hand, and so far so good.

Gasoline melts the glue on electrical tape. It will probably work for awhile.

I understand why you want to use that old spout, I am pretty sick & tired of the safety spouts, I never spilled so much gas as with safety spouts. Plus it takes 10 times as long to fill, increasing the opportunity to spill. Often I get so tired holding a 5 gal can I have to put it down for a moment to change hand positions and I spill doing that.

You find an old can with a goos spout (or vent) KEEP it!

I am also mystified at the way spilling so much fuel is acceptable with the so called safety caps. Those old 5 gal gas cans with the 2 piece lids worked flawlessly for me and I honestly cant remember spilling any fuel with them except the very first time I ever used one when I was a little kid filling my grandfathers old push mower. With these safety spouts I spill fuel almost every time I am forced to use one.

I see some good spouts for sale online but they are not listed for fuel cans but rather things like water filling spouts but many will work on the fuel cans as well. Do a search of E-bay and you might be surprised what is out there

I think it has a lot more to do with lawsuits, and the industry that uses our judicial system for their profit. Gov't is forced to act and then takes the blame but someone already got the money. Then we're stuck with the new problems.

I have a spare one of those handy rubber spouts with the plug that I got somewhere and I am NOT letting go of it!!

The EZ Pour replacement spouts work good if you don't mind adding yet another $10 to your fuel can cost and can drill a separate hole for the manual vent.
