Bargain $$ on mower deck replacement spindles

A few days ago replies here solved my Cub mower problem after the thing quit, they suggested the drive belt had broken. Right on!

Pulled the deck off and looked at the belt job & decided to have a shop fix it. Sinde I had the deck lying in the garage, I checked the deck spindles and it sounds like the bearings are shot. Checked prices at MTD (they really make most of the mowers sold in the US) & they wanted $90 less a little change.

Hmmm, probably a couple hundred for the belt repair plus close to $300 for spindles. Is it worth it? Or maybe I can beat that price.

On Amazon one source ( Wholesale Parts Direct) lists them for $28 each plus $10 shipping--can't say how much they would charge for shipping 3 of them. As they say on late night TV, "But wait! There's more!

There's my old friend Mr. EBay. Found one source 3 for $85 including shipping. Another for $166 EACH! Well, they are gold plated, so that price must be alright. I guess maybe, just maybe, I'll go for the 3 for $85 deal. I don't need gold plating.

MTD spindles are dry when new, there is no grease in the sealed bearings,

check out the prices in psep.biz, Cub Cadet Blade Spindle. i was just able to buy 6 new bearings at $1.94 each, 3 new spindle housings at $9.04 each,

after disassembly i carefully remove the snap in seal this allows one to pack them, on reassembly i leave off the inner seal which allows one to fully grease the spindles .takes a full tube to fill the 3 on my 50 inch deck the first time, till the grease comes out of the pressure hole by the upper pulley,then when ever i sharpen my blades a few extra shots helps them last years
