Got a barn going up--I'll take pics and share later. I want to concrete most of the floor. For part of the area I wouldn't mind having a wood floor for an enclosed work space. Has anyone done this? Does it make sense to leave an unpoured area that gets wood joists and subfloor? Doesn't seem to make sense to pour concrete and then build a wood floor over it. Thanks.

It sounds like you are thinking about wood joists in contact with the ground which I don't care for, even if treated.

If you do a raised floor over concrete it will leave a nice space for running wires and plumbing.

A drive-in loft will have a wood floor.

If you want wood on the concrete here is an interesting read:

One mistake I made when we poured our barn floor, and my shop floor was NOT placing
insulating foam boards down above the vapor barrier, and before the concrete.

Don't do this. Wood rot. Insects. Moisture/dampness.............

Yes, this is what you want to do.

You want a monolithic slab. And take the other poster's advice about the under slab insulation. You could also run PEX tubing in case you might ever want under floor heat in the future. Can't hook it up at a later date if the tubing's not there and you change your mind.

3/4 in CDX on 2x4 sleepers w 1 1/2 in of foam in between makes a nice strong, dead floor fpr a woodshop. Warm too.

Look up Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking mags online. There are numerous articles of finishing basements and building shops using this technique.

Use a quality moisture membrane and a floating wood floor and it will last over concrete- I recomend the Griffolyn T-65 Membrane, I have used a few hundred thousand sf of this stuff to mitigate mositure issues and no probs to date - should run about $.22 per SF and tape for seams is $25.00 per roll.
