I'm getting ready to build a barn to hold my Kubota L5740, boat/truck combo, a couple vintage tractors and other garden stuff. Also want to build a wood shop and hobby area. I have some questions as to good door/ceiling heights, garage door types, etc. and was looking for a good forum for that. Anyone know of a good forum or is this thread a good place to start? I'm sure many people have been through this and was hoping to get some good ideas, pitfalls, etc. from people with experience.

Thanks

Post your plans and questions here or start a new thread in the project forum. There are some experienced builders on this site.

Foozle, another site worth checking out is the Garage Journal Forum.

Don't know much about your situation so I'm taking a shot in the dark but . . .

a] Figure out how big it should be and make it bigger
b] Include a workbench -- best if a small section of it is at a lower level so you can do fine work sitting down plus it will double as a desk [amazing how much stuff you read and write in a barn/garage]
c] If at all possible [and it usually isn't], put doors on both ends so you can drive in and out like a run-through shed -- I've always envied having that option
d] Include plenty of outlets -- you'll block half of them but right now you don't know which half

And one more thing, I know a guy who lives in a cabin with his wife. They get along fine but he built a garage and made it a semi man-cave. He has a fridge, dish TV, a couple of recliners, dog bed, and a half restored tractor along with the actual tools, mowers, machinery et al you are supposed to have. You don't have to get super deluxe to go in this direction but if you plan on doing some projects out there, might as well make it your second home.

I am going to follow this thread if it grows as I am in the same boat as the OP. I need to mod an old barn (22x25) into a woodworking shop and may add on to it, it seems small. I also need to come up with a farm shop area where I can work on the tractors and implements, welding area, etc. This shop will probably be an add on to the large pole barn built last year for hay.

Busy couple years ahead as we are planning to also start building a pole barn house early next year. Need to get all of this done and when done it should also be time for me to retire so I can begin enjoying all of it. Not a barn or shop, but also getting ready to start on a farm pond in the next few weeks, plan to share that when it starts.

Foozle - if you decide to start a thread somewhere please share the info if you don't mind.

I would buy a few drafting templates so you can draw the barn and all the things you wish to store to scale. Then you should double the size of the barn.
