Has anyone had a barn taken down? I'm having one taken down, the construction
company is going to dig a hole on the property and put the barn into the hole and
burn it, then cover it back up. Has anyone had this done, any negatives?

Thanks

Make sure the hole is deep enough so you don't till up nail or other hardware later down the road.

I once had a place where the exisiting barn was a loser and it was way beyond repair. It blew down in a storm. I had a friend come over with his dozer and push it up so we would burn it. Afterward I hired a company with a LARGE Hough loader and dump truck to clean up the tailings. I wanted to go overboard with the clean up, knowing full well I would be hauling off way more dirt than what many would deem necessary. In the end I had 99.9percent clean up. I went around with magnets and got hardly anything. That sight became my loafing area for horses and it was important to have it perfect. I am glad I did it the way I did.

No negatives that I can think of. Its a tidy method of getting rid of debris.

The area where the barn is going to be buried is just pasture, so no worries of tilling anything up, thanks.

In our region, if the barn is old, there are plenty of folks who would love to have the wood. It would be a shame to bury it if someone can make good use if it.

I guess this is done a lot. We thought we would have to haul it away, but they say this is what they do. I will be using a magnetic roller to pick up any stray nails. Thanks for the advice.

We would have done that but this barn was a use what you have to build by the original owner. He used Trees for posts, whatever scrap wood, so not one of those barns you want to salvage. Only salvage is the metal roof.

Make sure you check with your local Department of Environmental Quality; in some states burning a building is prohibited by Air Quality regulations. Regs in our state would allow it only if it were a training exercise for fire fighters. Some areas may require a permit from the fire department also.
