Anand Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra, managing director since 1997
Why: Transformed family's industrial business into a global conglomerate.
When India opened its economy to foreign competition in the 1990s, Mahindra & Mahindra seemed marked for extinction. But scion Anand Mahindra, who studied film and earned an M.B.A. at Harvard University, restructured his family's company, transforming a business that made tractors and jeeps for rural India into a global conglomerate with interests in tractors, autos, technology, finance, and more. Publicly traded M&M, the auto and tractor arm, is now controlled by privately held Mahindra Group, where Mahindra is chairman.
Mahindra, 60, has succeeded by maintaining a level of transparency, governance, and shareholder focus rare in emerging markets. He likens himself to a conductor who finds talented musicians and helps them harmonize. He also is willing to bet on new ideas, like the young engineers sketches that led to the popular Scorpio SUV.
