Hello everyone, awesome site, just found it today and I had to register.

I have a JD 2305 since May of '06 and yesterday the battery just upped and died. It will take a jump and run forever until you shut it off then nothing. it has 60 hours on it. I guess the question is has any of ya'll who own this model have had the same issue? I'm guessing there is a dead cell or 2. What would be a good replacement battery? I'm not real happy with the OE

With engine off, check battery with voltmeter and it should read 12.5 volts or higher. Turn lights on and it should still read about 12 volts. If it doesn't, it's very likely the battery. I'd go to Tractor Supply or Advance Auto Parts for a new battery.

I caused a battery failure in my 4100 because I thought it was a no service required battery, and it wasn't.:(

Check the water level.

The OEM battery may or may not be a "good" battery. Even the good ones can go bad at times. Ten days ago, I drove our old 2001 Ford Windstar that morning and everything was normal. A couple of hours later, my wife was going somewhere and it wouldn't start, couldn't even get a solenoid click. I checked and it showed 6.1 volts. I put the charger on it until the charger showed 88% charge and 12.7 volts, turned off the charger, hit the starter for no more than a second or two, and nothing. Checked voltage at the battery and it was back to 8 volts. For reasons unknown it had suddenly developed an internal short.

The good news . . . it was a Motorcraft battery; free replacement warranty the first 36 months, prorated month 37 to 100. It lacked one month and 5 days being 36 months old, so the new one, parts and labor, was free at the Ford dealer.:)

And welcome to Tractorbynet, RoofDawg.

Thanks guys, I'll put a meter on it when I get home. I checked the water Gary it appeared fine.

If it can be used a hydrometer will give you more accurate results and be able to pinpoint a bad cell.:D

Yes, but it's sure been a lot of years since I owned, or even used, a hydrometer.:D

Since your tractor is a 2006 model, the battery may still be under warranty. I'd check with my JD dealer to be sure. Even an OEM battery should have a 3-yr warranty. You may not get full credit, but partial credit could help pay for a new battery. Of course, an OEM battery may have an inflated price, so a good aftermarket battery like an AutoZone Duralast Gold battery might be good. That battery has a full 5-yr warranty with some trade-in value out to 8 years.

Well, I had a Hydrometer till a year ago when it got dropped. Never bothered to replace it as batteries are tending to be maintenance free and one cannot access the fluid levels.:D

Jim, I'm sure there are some different Duralast batteries, but I recently priced batteries (for a neighbor while he was at work) at Walmart and the AutoZone across the street from the Walmart and for batteries with the same 3 year free replacement and prorated after that warranty, the AutoZone battery was about $20 higher. About 10 years ago, I needed a battery for a Cub Cadet riding mower, stopped at the Walmart in Corsicana to see about their price, then went to AutoZone. AutoZone was one penny higher than Walmart, but I bought at AutoZone rather than go back to Walmart.:D
