I bought my M-F used two years ago. When I received the tractor, the battery looked somewhat questionable, the cables were ragged, there was no battery hold down and while it would start the tractor, I just never trusted the battery. I store my tractor indoors and keep it on a smart battery charger when not in use.
All my batteries are kept in good condition with smart chargers. I never have battery issues. Many of my automotive batteries are 8-9 years old. The motorhome has 6 batteries that are always maintained with two smart chargers. The BMW motorcycle battery is 9 years old...never fails even in winter weather. The Windstar (2000 year model) is on its second battery. The riding mower (2010 model) is on its second battery.
Automotive batteries are like lottery tickets...you never know if you have a winner.
So, off to Wal-Mart to see if my old group 24 had any warranty left. Seems like it did. So, I got a new Maxx Everstart 750 CCA battery, brought it home and immediately put it on the charger. It was 75% charged and a mfgr date of 8/2018 so internal resistance has depleted the original factory charge. The good thing about these batteries is the warranty and tractor service is likely hard on batteries due to vibration and getting bounced around.
We'll see how this new battery hold up.
My Perkins engine needs the CAAs to spin fast enough to start. The tractor has plenty of alternator and the alternator was replaced early this year with new. so I'm not concerned about electrical load when the engine is running.
What do you folks choose as replacement batteries for your tractors?
