This is the person w/the alternator and battery problem.
1st...Thanks for the info on how to locate the positive and neg terminals...still however, when I switch the cables, I got a lot of smoke from the alternator and I got a lot of sparking from the terminal cables coming off my tractor(2210D). In fact, the positive term. cable turned bright red after running the tractor for about 3 minutes.
What the **** is goin on /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

2nd...I am pretty sure I burnt out the diodes on the alternator. I am on my way to autozone to check out the 72' Nissan alternator /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Do I have to make any structural adjustments to this alternator for it to fit? If so, what are they?...Or am I better off just buying a Yanmar alternator for my 2210D?
The price difference is a $120 /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.So I guess you know why I'm leanin towards the Nissan.

3rd...Is there a specific series of #'s I should look for when purchasing a battery for the tractor?
I assume that any old car battery would do. But I am questioning any assumptions now... I don't wan't nothing else to catch on fire /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

4th...Assuming all that I need is to change the alternator. What should I keep in mind while doing so?

Thanks all

#1 It sounds like to me you may have a short somewhere.I would look for a short before I replaced any parts to keep from destroying another good part .I would think any 12 volt car battery should work fine.Have you checked the cost of having the alt. rebuilt vs autozone?

Stop and get someone to work with you who has experience replacing the battery and searching for a short - a friend or neighbor, or pay a shop.

Batteries are inherently dangerous and what you are experiencing here could lead to disaster if it explodes while you are nearby.

By starting a new thread with every post, you are making it extremely difficult to assist; however, you most likely now have a direct short to ground in your alternator, and no, a bad cable does not cause a short, only an "open". I repeat the suggestion to take the alternator and regulator, (follow the wires from the alternator to a little black box, about 2 1/2x3" either on the firewall or under the dash), to the parts store for testing.

If you would keep this same topic going within your original thread -- you wouldn't have to explain this.

Be sure to check the positive cable and make sure that it has not worn through and shorted to ground, that could cause all the problems you've been having. If it got hot enough to turn red, I would replace it just to be on the safe side, you can take the old one to any parts store and they should be able to match it.

In all honesty it sounds like you need help. An experienced mechanic would have stood back and said "what's wrong?" Instead you hooked things up and actually ran the tractor. That is wrong on so many levels that you really need to stand back and address your abilities. Sorry to be so brutal, but it's the truth. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ?

your honesty is appreciated however, i can't afford a serious mechanic. In many ways that is the value of this discussion group. What I have managed to do is sit around the parts store and ask alot of good questions from mecahnics coming in and out. Again thanks for your honesty.

Dude so far you have cost yourself more than paying a mechanic would cost... Replacing a battery is one of the most basic things a person can do to a car or a tractor. Replacing a battery also can be very dangerous. You are lucky your battery has not exploded yet. If it does exploded it will send battery acid all around and could blind or scar you or someone else or an animal for life.. You need someone with some knowledge and sense to assist you. Do you have any friends that know a little about cars etc....?

Good luck
