John Deere 1026R
The battery on my Yanmar EX3200 has bitten the dust. It takes a few minutes of charging, before the battery has enough juice to start the tractor. The tractor then keeps the battery charged, while i'm using it. In a couple of days, I have to charge it. The tractor was purchase new, in July, 2012.

I know that I need a 12 volt battery and that's about all I know. Any other information? How much should I expect to have to pay?

I would guess that under normal conditions a lead/acid battery should last 5 - 7 years. It can help extend this life by keeping it charged with a Battery Tender or similar charger.

I don't know the size/class your battery would be but it might indicate this in your owners manual or on the battery.

The cost of a new battery will depend upon the type and grade you buy. You could get - lead/acid, gel cell or AGM and could expect to spend anywhere from $75 for lead/acid to $350 for a heavy duty AGM.

If you can't find info in your owners manual or on the battery itself - take the old battery to a battery store and they can show you what is available.

Just be very careful - battery acid can cause very severe burns.

I have a second thought - there is a possibility that the battery is still good. Take the old battery to a battery store and have them check it out. It might be that there is something amiss with the tractor charging system OR there could be something on the tractor that is drawing a lot of power from the battery.

I have had to change the battery once on my Deere. It took an ordinary car battery from an auto parts store. I just got the best grade of their house brand battery and it has lasted for years.

The only thing I would have done differently us that the original battery had "reversed terminals", which means that the positive and negative terminals were opposite of the normal layout. I replaced it with one like that, which they had in stock and which was only a dollar or two extra. When I got it home, the cables were long enough that I could have used either configuration, so look at that before you go in to buy one.

If it isn't suffering a parasitic drain . Installed the highest CCA battery with the highest reserve capacity .

Just measure the battery dimensions and get the best battery you can buy that will fit.
Pay attention to where the positive and negative posts are because they move and reverse by model and maker.
Check that your alternator is putting out sufficient voltage to charge the battery.
Sulphation from disuse and insufficient charging is the main cause of battery demise. When you charge the battery, charge it completely or you'll just make it worse.
I like AGM type batteries, more specifically Odyssey for a number of reasons but they ain't cheap.
If your tractor sits for prolonged periods and isn't run, I suggest putting a tender or maintenance charger on the battery. I have one installed in my tractor and just plug it into a handy extension cord when the tractor is going to sit for awhile. Say longer than a week or so.

The correct battery group is 26R, for the original battery. It was warranted for 5 years, and it was maintenance free. Purchase date of 2011. CCA of 540.

I purchased a 26R battery from Walmart for $48.88 and tax. Warranted for a year. Walmart had a 121R battery, that the physical size specs, were the same as the 26R. It was warranted for 5 years, at $119, plus tax. If the cheap battery lets me down, I'll go the more expensive route. Thanks for all the replies.

A previously stated a chronically charged or over charged battery will suffer a short service life. I have seen cheap skates start and stop a tractor four times in two minutes to drive out of the shed and into a pasture field .

It's hit and miss. Sometimes cheap batteries give excellent service and pricey ones don't deliver.

Whatever. Replace it soon! You may stress other more expensive components.
