Yanmar YM2210
Hi guys,

I had a lot of trouble getting my YM2210 started a week ago. I wanted to clear away some of the snow drifts. It was fairly cold, ~25 F, but it got a lot colder after that. It took me about 45 minutes to get it started. I had a magnetic heater attached to the bottom of the crank case to heat the oil (I didn't plan ahead, so it was only on there starting with when I wanted to start it.) My tractor has the thermostart (is that what it's called?) with the little fuel bottle and turn the key to the left to heat the thingy inside the engine. I ran down the battery, recharged it about 10 mins, ran down the battery, recharged it about 10 mins, etc. until I finally got it to start. I didn't get much engine cranking from a "fully charged" battery. Anyway, I expect that the battery wasn't in good shape before I started my attempts, and it ended up in a lot worse shape by the end, so I'm planning to replace it. It is the battery that shipped with the tractor from Frederick's when I bought it early summer of 2012. What type of battery should I buy, a normal car battery?

I got mine started yesterday. It was probably in the 20's. I used the compression release , pushed it in and kept cranking. I should have used the thermo start ,but I didn't. It turned over real slow and took several min. ,But it finally started. I have already replaced my batt. with a regular batt. It's 600 or 650 cca.I probably should have bought a little more cca 700-800

Personally, I would buy the biggest CCA that would fit in the tray! I have a Napa Commercial with 925 CCA similair to this: NAPA AUTO PARTS

My 1820D has a Group 31 top post battery. This battery is commonly used in commercial trucks and is in the 925 to 1000 CCA range. Get the biggest, most powerful battery that will fit in tha space available.

Agree, highest CCA that will fit the space.

Don't make the mistake I did. A counterman at Autozone told me their Dual Purpose marine start/lighting battery was good for offroad equipment that won't be run for months, since its different chemistry doesn't self-discharge as fast. But what I learned, and later heard from others, is this type doesn't withstand vibration sufficiently for our application. That battery had huge CCA at a reasonable price - but it only lasted a year.

Why do you think your battery is bad? They lose half their cold cranking amps below 32*, even more the colder it gets. If it will hold at least 12.6 volts it is good. you need to keep it warm.

Install a block heater and scrap that magnetic POS (or use it elsewhere) B4 doing the battery route.
OR an inline hose heater but then a frost plug block heater is only about $25. or so and a 1/2 hour job.

As to battery, the biggest that fits the available space.

1 hour of block heater + 2 glow plug cycles always starts my Mitsubishi at -25c.

I would like to add a block heater. Unfortunately, it looks like my model (according to Hoye's site) doesn't have an easy place to screw in the block heater. They sell a mod for the water pump that is $130 which provides a port for the heater, but that's starting to get pricy.

Do a little more searching. Years ago, I remember seeing a block type heater that was inserted into the radiator hose by cutting the hose and clamping the heater portion in place of the portion of hose you had to remove.
