Hello to everyone,

I hope someone has some knowledge regarding this issue.
My BCS 740 740 with a GX390 started leaking oil from the PTO shaft after a 6 hours workout session with a stone burrier on a hot day.
It's a few drops only everyday but I hate leaving things half-assed.

I wonder if there is a way do replace the seal without opening the tractor's gear or if there is anything else to take in account when this problem occurs (I guess it's the seal!).

Many thanks!!!

Yes, you can get to the seal on many (or maybe all?) BCS models from the PTO opening. I can't speak specifically to the 740 though.

On my 850, I developed a leak, talked to Earthtools about how to replace the seal, got everything opened and replaced and reassembled, but my new seal leaked too. Apparently, one has to clean everything out really meticulously. I am not good at meticulous. So for second seal replacement try, I brought it to my local BCS service center, and they got the leak stopped with a third seal and whatever else it took.

If I was going to try to replace a PTO seal myself again, I would keep several cans of brake cleaner handy, along with brushes, plenty of patience, and a magnet that could fit inside there too. The folks at Earthtools can provide guidance, and keep the seals in stock. Good luck,

I already ordered the seal and report when I have changed it.

Did you ever get that seal changed? I noticed the same type leak on the BCS 720 I'm working on. I was wondering if you were able to successfully replace the seal from the pto area without taking the transmission apart .

I ordered the seal and it sits patient in the shelf.
To my surprise, the shaft stopped dripping and the housing remains just wet a little bit, with wich I can live currently. Burried in projects I decided to procrastinate the exchange. Usually things are not self healing and get worse but not this time or not yet, so I didn't touch the running system.

Maybe you should observe for a while too?!

I may wait and see but I did go ahead and order the gasket from Earthtools. Should be here tomorrow. It looks pretty straight forward though. I'll let you know if I take the plunge and replace it.
