My BCS 852 has some cracks in the valve stem causing a slow leak. I think this is a tube-type tire, but haven't actually checked yet. Can anybody confirm that 852's come with tube-type tires and if so, where I could get a tube and for about how much? thanks a bunch, joe.

Hey Joe,

They are tube-type. Unless you have a very committed tire dealer in your area, you're gonna have a very hard time getting a tube from anyone but your local BCS dealer or Earth Tools.

Thanks farmerboybill.. I'll be making a call to Earthtools. Any idea if this tire can be man-handled off the rim without any special tools or am I better off just taking it down to the local tire shop?

Hey jo,

It can be done with "ordinary" tools (long flathead screwdrivers), but you run a very real chance of puncturing the new tube. You're best off having some tire spoons.

You have been getting good advice on changing the tube. The BCS part number for the 5x10 inner tube is 394.15010 but it has been replaced by the part number 394.14010 which is actually a 4x10 inner tube. They have been using that tube in new models for about three years with no apparent problems. We sell the tubes for $23.83 which seems high but there are not a lot of suppliers.

Changing the tire is fairly easy when the tire is warm such as sitting in the sun on an 80 degree day. Two screwdrivers get the tire off the wheel. By putting a very little amount of air in the new tube and tucking it well into the tire usually allows you to reinstall the tire on the rim without pinching the tube. Start at the valve stem work your way around the tire while keeping the tube in the tire and out of the way of the screwdriver or tire tools.

it is very important to keep 15+PSI in the tires to prevent the tire from slipping on the rim and cutting the valve stem. Check the tire pressure at least twice a year. The tires are so hard they don't look flat with no pressure in the tire.

BCSSHOP-

Thanks for the tip about warming it up in the sun first. Hadn't thought of that.

Also, I suspect what you said about low psi causing the valve stem to get sliced was the culprit in my case. Will have to keep closer eye on it in the future. Very good advice.

Hey jo,

I did a little searching online and could not find a 5.00-10 tube. The 4.00/4.50-10 tube Both Grillo and BCS offer is very small for the 5.00-10, but I found a 4.00/4.50-10 tube for 17 bucks on Amazon.com.

I think I'm gonna try to run the tires on my 850 tubeless and see how it goes.

Here's pics of the tube you'll get. Yeah, it's that small...

The other pic shows a set of BCS tires I just made tubeless. The valve stem did NOT like the hole in the rim. It's drilled too close to the innermost part and it doesn't have much of a chance to seat. If you wiggle the stem, you can hear air escaping, but no air escapes if you leave it alone. I slimed the insides of the tire and especially the stem and it seems to have helped. We'll see how it goes.

The reason the rims look bad is they went through a fire, along with the 735 that they were on. The Acme engine was completely cooked in the fire, as were the tires and most of the cables. I pulled the Acme, mounted Kohler Magnum, changed the fluids, mounted different tires (4-10s), and had a running machine again. These tires will now go back on it. I also have an Acme Diesel that will go on it very soon. BCS and Grillo tractors sure are tough!

All the BCS inner tubes I have are marked 4.00/4.50x10. I've had no incidents of punctures in the 5x10 tires except when the blade bolt broke on the dangerous DelMorino brush mower and went through the tire, tube and bent the steel wheel.

The 6.5x12 tires I've gotten as replacements have been marked as tubeless and they have worked fine on the BCS steel wheels. I don't think running the 5x10s tubeless should be any problem as long as you keep up the air pressure.

BCS 10in. Inner Tube Valve Stem Shear

We got a new 853 last year and on the first use this year, one of the tube stems sheared off. What was discovered: Some time ago, BCS stopped using the Italian made Pirelli tires and tubes. The new tiller we bought has "Union" tires and tubes, made in China. Both are greatly inferior. Just a short note on the tires first- The Pirelli tires are radially designed so that the tread depth is greater and the tube will inflate evenly. The Union tires are square shaped and have less tread depth. Reading the previous posts indicates that the Union tubes are undersized. The valve stem on the Union tubes is located directly in the center. This causes the inflated tube to pull the valve away from the rim hole and cut into the stem. When the stem begins to leak, the deflated tire will spin on the rim and shear the stem off. The Pirelli tubes have the stem located toward one side and it aligns with the rim hole. I spoke with BCS in Oregon yesterday, they said that this is the first that they've heard of the problem. I requested to have Pirelli tubes available and am to get a return call from Ray in Oregon. I will update if that happens. I also sent an email to Pirelli in Italy asking for availability of the 5.0-10 tubes, the Georgia office said that tube is not available in the USA. If anyone knows when the switch to the Chinese tires was made, let us know. Is there anyone else with this problem? Has anyone found a source for the correct size with the valve stem that aligns with the rim hole?
