New member, searched all the threads. My BCS 715 has started slipping out of PTO engagement. If I pull the lever back firmly it stays engaged, but left in the detent, it partially slides back and makes a grinding sound. I bought it used a few years ago. Can I replace the gear or tell if it's worn?

Most likely, you have a worn slider - Part number 564.43164. If you're replacing it, you may as well replace the engagement lever as I'm sure it's gonna show wear - Part number 523.43168. You might be wise to order two new 4-20 spring pins as well - 342.13020 It's always best to have part numbers when dealing with BCS dealers - the ones less intimate with the machines tend to order the wrong parts. Check my work, while you're at it.

It's a fairly simple matter to replace this. After you clean out all the grease, you'll need to drive out two spring pins on the slider lever and slide out the PTO lever. Depending on how old your 715 is, there will either be a ball and spring inside the slider or on the outside of the transmission housing. These are what hold the PTO engaged or disengaged. Don't lose them. Looks like the serial number break might be at 79949 - earlier being inside, later being outside, but they didn't keep very good records so if you're close to this break it's anybody's guess which way it is. It might also be at 67962...

Here's the parts breakdown link from BCSAmerica.

Thanks for the detailed advice. I've been looking at this thing most of the morning and it does look like the lever is worn back. Everything you said makes sense. My biggest question now is how to remove the locking pins. Do I just drift them out through the back?
Your part numbers match the ones I looked up. Thanks again farmerboybill.

It worked great! Parts are on order. The slide lever is badly worn back, probably in part for me not keeping enough grease in the housing. I'm going to replace the slider too.
Thanks a bunch. You really helped.

Those parts look like my '87 735, I replaced mine a couple of times and the shaft on the tiller was worn enough that I had to get the short extension and I just leave it bolted to the tiller, that way I have a new shaft at the engagement coupling. Tough old machines that just go forever.

A few years have passed but thanks to all that helped with this thread.
I had the same problem with the PTO coming disengaged on my early model 715 (serial 24---). The part numbers listed by Farmerboybill matched perfectly and the external repair was much easier than having to remove the PTO cover on the newer models. I had the parts off and replaced in under an hour and most of that was spent cleaning away the old grease. I wish I had done this last year rather than dealing with the problem for so long.
My only complaint was the outrageous price for the parts, about $140 in total!!!!!!

What would be the cause of a 948's pto popping out of gear?
