I own an older (1970's) International industrial tractor with a BD154 diesel engine. It is cold here so I squirted a small amount of ether into the air filter because it would not start. I have done this once before despite advice not to. It started right up, but after running for about two minutes I suddenly heard a sound that sounded like a bad compression leak. I shut it off and I can see that one of the glow plugs appears to have pushed out from the cylinder. It is still attached, but one is pushed out further than the others. Does anyone have experience with a problem like this? If so should I just try to replace the plug? The glow plugs were replaced by the CASE/IH dealer a few months ago. Thanks for any advice that anyone can give.

The only bd154 I've been around is an IH 384 and those glow plugs are threaded in. If seems to be pushed out you should carefully remove it because the threads could be damaged. It might have been loose in the first place I guess, but tread on the side of caution. I was told by my Dad never use ether because it is really hard on the engine.

Thanks for the reply. The unit I have is a IH238, which is the industrial version of the 384. (same engine) The glow plug is still threaded into the head. It just appears to have expanded-exploded- so it is now longer, about 2 inches, than the other three plugs. I have decided to take it in and have a shop look at it. Thanks again for taking the time to reply!

How did you get on with the glow plugs on the 238, is it fixed, do the plugs work o/k ????

I had my local J.D. dealer pick the tractor up and they replaced two plugs and said it starts and runs fine. I have not got it back yet because I am waiting on some other parts for the power steering. I suspect that the I.H. dealer that installed new glow plugs a few months ago may have done it incorrectly, possibly the plugs were not tightened correctly. When I get it back and have put a few hours on it, I'll post an update. Thanks for asking!
