110 volts will do it in nicely. So will a 30-30. You have the right to protect your livestock from wild animals.

I probably should clarify my "small calving bull" throws small calves, but he is big, in the 2000 lb range, became nasty and territorial this year. Not too worried about him or the heifers, just the trees. But to your point, I do have a gun in the truck when I go to that property (cougars also wander through from time to time), just never see the bear.

Try just a little bit after dusk and leave the dog in the truck. Stick your nose in the air and if you smell something that smells like a over used outhouse then the bear is fairly close and upwind of you. They are basically shy and will try to avoid humans and dogs.
