I picked up a really nice SC5540 Bearcat chipper/shredder and it's just about due to have the shredder knives turned which means next time they will need to be replaced.I tried a search of the forum and came up with 1280 threads that may or may not refer to Bearcat shredder knives so decided to be a PIA and ask in a new thread. Where can I get a fair price on a set of knives for this shredder? The part # as far as I can determine is 70856 and the price for a set is $295 or individually for $29.45 each. That's too much.
TIA Jim

Some shredder blades offer all four corners. Does the Bearcat not have the same?

No they are only sharpened on one side so you get one flip and done.In doing some looking I've found that this is a 2009 machine so maybe the knives last a long time but I suspect this was a lightly used unit because the chipper blades had never been turned til today. The fellow I bought it from said he used it quite a bit but he kept it in the garage with his B7500 Kubota which looked brand new so I think his idea of a lot of use is different from mine.

(sorry, the "image" did not result in a link)

Four corners
neat and square...

Perhaps your unit is different.

I've not heard of shredder blades "sharpened" at all, just "squared off". chipper blades on the other hand have either one or two edges.

But...I have no particulare experience with the model you are referencing.

Jus' try'n ta hep! ;-)

These are sharpened on one side with a wavy/serrated edge and seem to be hardened, the back side is just a flat/ blunt side. They really work well even though there appears to be considerable wear on the used portion. They aren't anything like my old Super Tomahawk or the Mckissick I've seen.

How did you find out it is a 2009 model?

I bought one back in '92 that had the same style of shredder knives as yours, looks like 2 cycle-bar mower blades welded together. I don't know when they switched to the flat strap hammer bar style that the one I have now uses. I bought this one used last year and was led to believe it was more than a hand full of years old.

I did a search for a parts manual and based on the serial # it said it was 2009. I'm not positive but I believe it was on the Bearcat site.

Well,,,, I wish I hadn't looked. It seems mine may be older than I was led to believe. It said models prior to 1999 could be search by model number only, not serial number. Below, is what I copied from the Bear Cat web site.

Anyone have an idea what "Rev Date" means?

"Doc#" I am guessing is document number. But the 16023 is used from 1991 to 2005

Manuals for Chipper/Shredders Model 554
Manual-- Description-- SN Range---- Doc #-- Rev Date
Owners-- 540 (PTO)-- 0 - 54-0001-- 16023-- 02-01-1991

I think that rev date means revision date which I guess is when a change was made.Just guessing. If you look for a parts manual rather than owners manual I think you get more info.
