That's some crazy wood. What causes that?

I don't think that the pictured wood is box elder, but a fungus that attacks box elders contains a pigment that produces crazy patterns in the wood of infected trees.

What a true shame to burn either of those two pieces of wood. I pay a fortune for wood with grain patterns like that for my wood projects.

That orange/red piece is almost beyond belief.
