Now that you know where the nest is, go out at night with a jar of about 8 ounces of gasoline. Quickly pour the gas on the nest and walk quickly away. Don't ignite the gas, the fumes will kill them. Best if it's cool, below 50 degrees because they are sluggish at those temps and you are safer from attack. If it doesn't cool off at night, just do it when it's coolest.

The problem is, I don't know where the nest is - or if there even is a nest. The were flying around under several pine trees in the front yard, probably four or five hundred square feet of area.

Can you take a picture with your hand next to one, so we can get an idea of the size of the critter?

I woulda if I coulda, but those little buggers are quick. I took probably 25 pictures and could only see one of the bugs in one or two of them. I was standing in the area and they were flying around me, not paying any attention to me.

I honestly don't recognize that insect, but I will tell you I'm 99% sure it's not a honeybee, nor what I would call a yellowjacket. From your picture, and from the fact that they were in a swarm vs. solitary, I would guess that they are hornets.
