I'd like to get the lift capacity of my 430 loader up around where a 460 is and was thinking about changing the lift cylinders out for larger ones. Has anyone tried this?

Have not tried it, and I wouldn't either.
The larger cylinders would lift more but be slower, I believe.
They would lift more, and require more weight to counter balance, which puts more strain on a tractor possibly not designed in its smaller frame for that load.
They would lift more and put more strain on the 430 FEL which also is not likely designed for that extra load.

Let us know if it doesn't tear your mid-size CUT apart. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good question considering you have a 990. Dig deep into the specs - and if your 990 doesn't actually have the same exact axles as the other large frame JD Cuts, it at least has the same load capacity (front and rear axles each are rated a tick over 5000 lbs as I recall). So it's strong.

I've always wondered why JD didn't permit the 460 on the 990 - although the wheelbase and overall weight is slightly less than the 4000 series large frame tractors - it's not that much smaller or lighter.

A safer but more expensive solution would be to sell off / trade in the 430 and buy a new 300CX. Still not as strong as the 460 - but compared to the older 430 it narrows the gap considerably. And it's spec'd and blessed by JD for the current 990.

300CX - 1598lbs lift to full height, 3327 breakout
460 - 2325 to full height, 3863 breakout

(all numbers at the pivot pin)

The 300CX numbers are a big step up from the 430.

I would sell/trade off the whole thing...

I bet that there are beginning top be a lot of 4500-4700's and even 4510-4710's being traded on the new machines. What better way to get a 460 but on a nice 4600? I think the difference may be a little more than the cost of beefing up the present loader, but the results will be much better and a whole lot better than if something were to go wrong with the modified setup. (like your liability if something very bad goes wrong...)

If I wanted to buy a whole new machine I probably would not be considering beefing up my 430. Frankly, I think my 990--with actual metal fenders--is built better than the newer models anyway. And since I just put a backhoe and canopy on it my wife would have a fit if told her I wanted to get something different.
