i would suggest that you find a teaching pro at one of your local golf courses. most of the assistant pros at country clubs or public courses supplement their income by giving lessons.you will learn much faster not having to stop bad habits that you might have developed by trying to figure it out on your own.he or she will probably have some clubs for you to use during your lessons. most can help with club fitting and possibly help locate good used equipment if that is what you want. good luck, golf is a life long sport.

Good advice...I have 4 courses within 10 - 15 miles of me that all offer lessons. I think that's what I will do.

Mike, I took up bowling about 12 years ago. Didn't buy equipment until about the third year, but that is the most important thing to do, have your own. Using someone else's stuff, or the house stuff just doesn't feel right. And you probably won't get the same equipment each time.
Then you have to practice, practice, practice as someone has already mentioned. Golf like bowling requires you to be able to repeat the same thing consistintly (swing a club, golf or throw a ball, bowling). Once you can swing the different clubs the same way every time, you can become a good golfer. Doesn't matter if you hook or slice or hit it straight. As long as you do it every time. Then you just have to adjust you aim.
And each time you play, someone will give you a pointer or two to help. Accept and use what's good and improves you game, and let the rest go. But back to the beginning. The most important thing is to have your own equipment. And then go forth and wack the ball and walkor ride.

Oh yea, the reason I took up bowling is, that when you hit the golf ball, you gather up your clubs and walk or ride to where you hit the ball, and then you get another club and hit it again?????? Bowling you throw the ball and stand there and wait and the ball comes back to you, now that's what I like.

Any advice for a beginner? Any good golf sites on the net? I checked, there's no golfbynet.com. :(

I tried it a couple times with folks from work. They went too fast for a complete beginner. It was kinda fun, but I stick to the archery range/course down the street :D

Lay down until this feeling goes away. Or drink some hard liquor. Golf is basically an excuse to waste time & money on something absolutely useless. Plus your wife will hate it. Better to buy more tools....

After playing the game for over 40 years the best advice I can give is don't take up the game unless you are more even tempered than most of the people in the world.

Good advice. I know plenty of people who are club throwers. No fun to golf with. When looking for a foursome for a recent United Way outing (shotgun start scramble) that was my first question. If the person was not out to have fun, I went to the next person.
