Wow... if it's anything like the Belarus 250AS that the local JD dealer had a few years ago... I would turn around and run away as fast as I could.

Keep in mind they were different tractors...

The transmission did not shift like any other transmission I've ever seen before... maybe something was broken inside???

It did not turn very sharp at all... the front wheels would only turn maybe 20 degrees either side of center... definitely not maneuverable.

I don't know if it's even possible to get parts for one of these Belarus tractors... The website listed in the ad just says "call for availability" on everything.

The Belarus tractor I saw was built like a tank, but that goofy transmission, lack of turning radius, and ability to get parts was a definite no-go for me. Maybe this tractor is made quite a bit differently... I don't know, it's a Belarus.

$9000 sounds pretty steep for a Belarus...

I wouldn't touch it with the extension that I use to touch things that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.
I had one. Sold it for scrap metal for $600.
In addition to what XLR82V2 said, the dry brakes lasted about 20 hours on my hills, and the electrical system completely failed. With no radiator, you don't have to constantly blow trash out of it to keep it from over heating, but you DO have to constantly blow out the cooling fins around the cylinders for the same reason.

Don't know about the US but in the UK owning an old Belarus is the ultimate embaressment

Parts and knowledge is hard to come by.

Dealers won't even let them in their gates, let alone sell them!

I'd stay away from them, choose something with a bit of street cred :D

A local contractor runs the baler on a Belarus 80 hp. He bought it at a dealer, who got it traded on a Case and wanted to get rid of it fast. That contractor got a 3 year old tractor, with just 300 hrs, for under 1/2 the new price.

He also runs an older Belarus as his sprayer tractor, because the classic Belarus portal axle, combines high ground clearance with 4wd. Ideal to spray in higher corn crops.

In Holland there are several sources of parts. I think we have 3 independent, unofficial importers for Belarus tractors. Mostly the same guys that import chinese tractors and tools by the shipload.

Knowledge, hmm do you really need knowledge to service a Belarus ?

It might be different in other countries but I know that they are no exactly popular in the UK :D

I heard that they are simple and generally reliable though. (As long as you can get parts)

I think the modern ones might be better?

I had a Belarus 420 AN for 5 or 6 years. It came with a Bushhog 2440QT loader that was probably worth more than the tractor. It was a strong, powerful, crude machine. At that time, parts were quite easy to come by and were not awfully expensive, but not cheap either. The electrical system was a joke - after about 3 years, I had replaced almost everything and it was actually in good shape. I still remember my starting procedure:

1. Push in negative ground disconnect button.
2. Open throttle to 1/3 position
3. Use left hand to reach thru steering wheel spoke and turn key switch to 45 degrees to engage glow plugs
4. Use right hand to reach down and pull out on engine decompression lever
5. Use left foot to push in clutch pedal
6. Put transmission in nuetral.
7. Use right foot to push in brakes (if unlevel and loader was off - tried to make it a habit anyway.
8. After holding keyswitch for about 30 seconds (when little coil on dash was glowing red), use thumb on left hand to push in momentary button to engage starter
9. Wish that had put in earplugs when engine begins to crank
10. Wish that had put on respirator when white smoke belches from exhaust.
11. Use right hand to push in decompression lever
12. Pray that it starts

Warm day:

13. Engine starts; take thumb off of button
14. Release Keyswitch
15. Let off clutch with left foot
16. Open up throttle to about 1/2 and let it warm up

Cold day:

13. Engine cranks but doesn't start - cuss; let off start button
14. Wait about a minute and repeat steps 8-12
15. Engine cranks but doesn't start - cuss some more; left of start button
16. Repeat steps 13 & 14
17. Engine starts - see Warm day, steps 13-16
17a. Engine cranks but doesn't start - cuss even more, let go of clutch, key switch, decompression lever, brakes
18. Cuss when tractor begins to roll away because you didn't put it in gear; put on brakes, put in gear.
19. Get off tractor, wish you had bought something besides a Belarus, go do something else for the day.

Seriously, it had good days and bad days. If you can tinker (alot) with electrical problems, they can be okay. I ran full synthetic oil in mine and never had overheating problems even on 100 degree days, but you do have to keep the head fins clean.

$9000 is about two to three times what that setup should go for. The bare tractor should sell for about $2500 or $3000. Add $1500 to $2500 for the used loader (this is my opinion only).

Good luck
