A while back, following a flush/cleaning of cooling system, I had a gravel'e whine coming from the water pump. I ordered a pump and all the other necessities(belt, gasket, hoses, etc.) to get the job done. Not the time of year for me to be caught without a tractor. Between the time I ordered the pump and it arrives the sounds coming from the pump all but disappeared. No harm, I'll just hold onto the pump, but I did notice that my belt had a gash/tear in it. I waited a bit and then when time allowed I decided to change the belt. The lower radiator hose goes through the belt, so I had to drain the radiator to remove the hose. The old hose was pretty bad so i chose to replace it instead of reusing....it wouldnt have mattered if i had wanted to keep it because i ended up having to use a dremel and grinding/cutting wheel to cut the upper clamp off - thus ruining the hose. I put the new belt on and find that it's about 2" too long - I can't come close to tightening it (Aaron ). So off the the auto parts, and i get a replacement.

I get it all buttoned up and a couple weeks go by and I decide to check the belt to see if it has stretched and might need a little tightening. It was a bit slack so I decide to tighten it. As i am doing so I notice that where the hose passes by the belt it has been rubbing , in fact it has almost rubbed a hole all the way through :eek:. I've ordered a new hose.

I'm going to have to do some careful checking when I replace the hose. I did notice that when I replaced the hose i didn't push it up onto the fitting as far as it was originally. There's about another 1/4" it needs to go to where the paint mark from the original is. This should change the geometry down where the belt is - pulling it away from the belt. My other concern is that I bought to small of a belt? :ashamed: and a slightly larger one would force me to push the alternator out more - thus getting farther from the hose. Problem there is that with the belt I have there is only about 3/4"? left on the adjustment bar at the alternator.

Would a belt 1" longer only use 1/2" of my adjustment bar?

Usually the wrap around the alt pulley is less than 180. Therefore, the adjustment will be more than 1/2" for the longer belt. Stay with what you have and just be sure the hose is clear. The situation should improve as you adjust for belt wear.

Put a hose protector on the hose or zip tie a piece of the old one split open to it to protect if theres room.

There usually all size belts sometimes less than 1/2" increments.

I found the same thing when I bought the YM240 (engine is about the same as your YM2210). The prior owner had replaced the lower hose and it was getting shredded by the belt, it was cut halfway through. At the wear spot I put on a tire patch and a hose clamp with its smooth part facing the belt. That was in 2003. I haven't seen a problem since.

@california, I thought you were getting rid of all the farmer rigging, come to find out your rigging it alond the way too!!!

I know the belt is close to my fan shroud on my ym2000. I took pliers and bent it back for more clearence. When its too loose it will slap the shroud. I dont rememer the belt being too close but that kind of seems familiar?

Well....I've applied California's fix with the tire patch & hose clamp. I tried to slip the rad. hose up farther, but there's a bolt that is stopping it. I don't recall any notch cut in the old hose, but maybe there was. Not really enough room in there to cut a notch while in place....and I don't really want to drain the radiator...guess I'll see how she runs. Hope I tightened the "protector" clamp enough so it doesn't slip around....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

While mine is fine.. I have seen people use a small piece of sheet metal ,wrap the sheet metal around the hose, and secure it with hose clamps

Hi Todd,
Sorry about that. That is frustrating. After a little digging I do see where there was a design change where they used a 1" shorter belt & different water pump pulley on a few of the early "B" models. The belt sent fits all of the YM2210 & 2210D... just not all YM2210B or BDs. I have not ran into that before but I will make a warning on the website listing & get you credited back.

I put the new belt on and find that it's about 2" too long - I can't come close to tightening it (Aaron ). So off the the auto parts, and i get a replacement.

Thats good service Aaron.

Todd did you call them when you ran into this problem i know they would of fixed it without it having to be put on the internet. Maybe it was one of those things you didnt feel like calling for just a few $$?

Another trick you can do is use a zip tie to pull the hose towards an anchor point away from the belt. sometimes doing this makes the hose want to develop a kink or restriction, especially when hot. the answer to that is to put a hose clamp right at the point where it bends and wants to kink. the clamp compresses the diameter a hair, but forces it to it's round profile.

I have a ford 850 that has power steering and a radiator, and an alternator, and a replacement radiator.

the water outlet on t e new rad is slightly different than original. the alternator and pulley setup is tighter(smaller) than the original genny ( large) pulley .( to keep the alt away fromt he very close fit loader frame.

The net result was a belt that ran 1/4" away from a hose, and due to normal engine vibrations and what not every now and then there was contact.

Previous owner's fix was to booger some flex tube and make a pvc rub shield. this worked for the hose, but wore the belt. :)

I put the OE hose back on in best fit location and did the hose clamp and zip tie trick and got a safe 1" clearance and a non kinked hose that looks a hair funny due to 2 hose clamps in the center of it.
