Howdy y'all just resurrected an old Ford 4400 tlb-backhoe is a 755 i believe

Just got the backhoe working and bent a hydraulic ram digging out a huge stump

The casting also broke on the top of the ram where the dust seal sits

Whats your best advice? Replace or take to hydraulic shop for repair?

Thanks for any help

Repairing may not be the cheapest route but will be a stronger cyl and easier to plunk it back in and go.....If you go the replacement route there will be some fabrication work to make it fit, hose and fitting changes, and the stroke may be off a little

the old ford cylinders have v-packing sets that can withstand much punishment a backhoe can dish out (which you are very aware of:mad:) newer cyl designs don't have the over kill built-in but will work

Since you bent the cyl rod I'd suggest you check relief valve pressure as relief valve must be STUCK

The ram can be straightened but can the cracked casting be repaired or replaced?:)

the damage you don't see (in the barrel) is what you should be worried about....NEVER power them back in when you notice bent rods...:(

Thanks for the help. Is the relief valve in the pump on this model? The hydraulic pump is mounted under the radiator and is run off the crankshaft pulley. Thanks

Thanks to all for responding with help and advice. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get the cylinder rebuilt? i am new to the hydraulics and don't want to get ripped off at the shop. The cylinder shaft is 2" diameter and is approximately 37 inches long when retracted.

Thanks again for all the help.

Depending on the damage internally (assuming it's all good), you may be facing a $500-700 repair (hopefully the gland retainer nut is repairable or replaceable)

To save money, you take it apart and bring the whole cyl disassembled and have your local place price out making just the rod and selling you the seal kit vs them doing the whole job

Find a local place that does their own hyd rods, don't settle for a hyd shop that farms out the machine work....:duh:
