DeForest:

May I ask why you have had it with tall fescue? Just the mowing? Or something else?

Curious ...

you may be too far north for bermuda grass. however, the bermuda type that is seed planted is primarly a lawn grass. don't know your intention, but, the bermuda varieties that grow really rank and tall are all sprig planted. check with local ag agent and they can advise you of the best for your area. if you are intending to plant bahia grass, be prepared to sharpen your blades before EACH mowing. that stuff is very tough to cut/kill out.

I have had no luck with fescue it clumps ,I tryed all kinds Rebal , kentuky 31, Contractors mix , you name it i have tryed it. so I thought I would try a different type and see if that would work . The area we are in near Hickory NC has been in the dry area of the state for the last 3 yrs and the area is about 4 acres just can water it all . So that why i would like to try Bermuda or some other type of grass seed .... Dee

Dee,

I also live in the Hickory area (south of Mountain View) and have messed with fescue grasses for lawns all my adult life. I wouldn't even try to plant it in the Spring months. I always do any planting in October or early November. And as dry as we've been lately, you'll be lucky to get any results at all, even in the Fall months.

I think the extension agents, lawn care professionals, et al. will all say that Fescue is the best for our area. I've tried a few others, but with only minimal results.

I've always found that even with the best initial results, fescue takes a lot of work to maintain - over seeding in subsequent years, keeping weeds out, etc.

And if you're referring to a lawn, 90% of the people around here mow it too short. I always mow mine at the highest setting possible.
