I am looking at the 4000 series JD with 400x loader. Can anyone recommend the JD 4n1 vs aftermarket like W.R. Long brand.

Thanks

Hugh,

As we discussed, I have had the JD 4n1 bucket on my 4000 series. It is very nice. I did not like the bucket actuation quite as much as my nieghbor's Long bucket on his 4320. They seemed to be built about the same. The Long bucket is a smidge more pricey, but not by a lot. The long bucket has its trade off's as well, mainly in that the hydrualic apparatus to actuate the toggle and lines run to a remote cylinder mounted just off the right loader arm. It looks a little unfinished and busy to me, but works fine. My tractor had the third scv lever that allowed you to open/close the loader and the joystick did everything else; th Long bucket can have all functions through the joystick and toggle, which is a slicker setup. In short, there is not too much difference between them, but I would give a slight edge to the Long bucket, for the reasons noted.

Couldn't you guys get away with forks to do most of the things you want the 4in1 to do? A 4in1 is nice but I had one and was disappointed that I couldn't get stumps and brush high enough to load a truck efficiently. With the forks I get the height and more reach. It also ended-up bent and bowed and a greasy, heavy mess... Just something to consider...and considerably less dinero too...

I have a Long UJ1 which seems to have more capacity then the Deere model. It also weighs a little more so it is stronger. I agree the lines around the valves are untidy and can get snagged.

Dave,

I agree with you in many ways here. I had a JD 4n1, and while I liked it, I did not have it that long. When I sold my 4520, and ordered another 3720 which has not arrived yet--I did not order another 4n1. Maybe down the road, but for my uses it did not help me that much (although it was neat to have). If I were buying one for homeowner or light/medium duty use, the JD would be a nice choice. For commercial use I think the Long would be a better choice. It is heavy duty but does not seem to hold as much. One could buy quick interchanging attachments and not get a 4n1 I think too.
