Hi guys, just got my first tractor last thurs, a new kubota L3400. I should clarify the term craddle hills for those that do not know what they are. They are those small knobby bumps all over my woodlot. With dads tractor more than once I got hung up, all 4 wheels off the ground, loader with no ground contact and wishing like **** that I had the winch on the back.

I want to get or make an attachment that will allow me to level these bumps in my tractor trails throughout the woodlot. I have been going through this site and I have seen rippers, front or back, box scrapers and blades. I would really like to know what attachment would be the best for leveling these bumps. The soil in these bumps would have to go on both side of the bump not only ahead of the bump. I try and make my trails where I have to cut the minimum number of trees but there will be some small stumps and some roots. Rocks are usually not a great problem.

This is the best tractor site that I have found. I like building things and I have found so many ideals here that I will probably never live long enough to build everything I want to make. If nothing else it should keep me out of trouble but maybe too much time in my workshop instead in my woodlot with the tractor.

Thanks guys and keep my dreams going.
Eric

Sounds like a job for a box blade to me.

Can you post up some pictures? Never seen a "craddle hill" and it might help us to understand what they look like.

Most of these craddle hills are only 1 to 2 ft in height and like I said rocks should not be a problem. I believe these were form from windfalls over thousands of years. When a tree is blown over the roots bring all the surface dirt with it to a vertical plain, when everything rots, it all falls down in a pile. I cannot get any pictures now because everything is covered with snow and I will not be going down till easter and by then the road will be so soft that I will not be able to get to my cottage or woodlot. My cottage is 120 miles from here and I have not built my trailer yet so I cannot drive in the mud with the tractor to get there.

There are not too many of these hills that I would have gotten hung up on with dad's tractor. His tractor was bad in the woods, it was a 1978 kubota with a fel that had an angle iron across underneath and 2 pipes leading to the rear end where stumps just liked to get in, right between those 2 pipes. If I could level these bumps it would increase my traveling speed a lot.

Thanks guys.

Welcome Eric and congratulations on you new tractor!

How about backing up with a boxblade then pulling/scraping those bumps forward and flatter. After the bump is broken up, then go in reverse, push the dirt to the side with the back of the boxblade down. This way without using the FEL, you won't have to turn the tractor around each time and should work with 1' to 2' cradles hills.

Check out 3RRL's thread. He's a guru with a boxblade! And alot of other things too.

Craddle what? I'm glad you clarified....Up here we call them hummocks. FEL and box blade should do the trick. Get a tooth bar on your bucket and cut those cra.....hummocks down!
