Buying Advice Best buy for 2 1/2 acre mowing ?

Hello. I have been mowing my hilly, bumpy uneven 2.5 acres with my troybilt super bronco 19 hp 42" deck for about 6 years now and have beat the heck out of that poor machine. Replaced numerous steering bushings, ball joints and steering rack gear but other than that it's been a tough li'l mower. I've even bush hogged my garden with it. Steering is getting quite a bit shakey lately, but I've already got parts for it. But the other day the transmission gave in. Started jerking and making 'klanking' noises. I was able to drive it to the barn in reverse. And now I have a fellow putting a 2nd hand tranny in it just to get it going again. All in all for $1250 new I can't complain, but I do believe It's time for a change.

I am going to buy a new mower as soon as I save up a little more money. I'm talking 2000 max. Being on a fixed income I have limitations on expense. What lawn tractor should I be looking at ?

2000 simplicity 20 hp garden tractor

This is what you need. It has power steering, hydraulic lift, heavy duty deck. The engine is a Briggs commercial. Good mower, I have one just like it. It also has a differential lock that really comes in handy on hills with a bullet proof transmission.

This one may not be close enough but watch craigslist and you will eventually find one.

I own a Simplicity Broadmoor with a 20 hp motor. Hydrostatic transmission with one pedal to go forward and one to go in reverse. Right next to each other. An excellent mower. 46" deck on mine. If you can find a used one with low hours on it for $2000 that is in good shape I would also recommend that mower.

Sounds like you are handy enough to do your repairs....I'd buy the best used heavy garden tractor you can find. The Simplicity's mentioned are good ones...also older Wheelhorses and John Deere's come to my mind.

A new deere super GT is 12,500 or 10x your Troy. I don't think the deere would make it 60 years, so you're ahead of the curve right now. Many Husqy shops are blowing out their GT leftovers for about $2K this time of year. If you want some style, and a project, look at the 20-30 year old GT. Deere 420, Cub 982, ingersoll 446, simplicity sunstar, Massey 1655, and so on.

Find a used small 2wd Kubota, Yanmar, or Iseki diesel tractor and a rear pto driven finish mower. You will be all done with belt driven gas lawn tractors forever and never look back.
