A neighbor bought a 1972 Oliver 1755 in '95 or '96 and I've forgotten whether he said he paid $5,000 or $5,500, but in either case, he's sure gotten his money's worth out of it. For two summers, I racked up a lot of hours on it myself, cutting, baling, and moving hay.
I'd look at the IH 66 or 86 series.
I just sold an early 70's 1466 (140HP) for
$ 10K.
These are strong tractors or go to the 88 series.
The family is looking at getting a newer Magnum
and selling the 5088 (150 HP) and 5288 (168HP)for
around $20k each.
I used a Case 970 on the farm with a cab - Case had nice cabs back then. - also a neighbor had a Allis XT 190 - He had it a long time. My 1st tractor was a Farmall 966 - No Cab - Daddy said I Didn't need a cab starting out farming - Still no cab.
My father in law was nice and let me use the 5020
to haul my grain into mill.
NO CAB, 5 to 7 miles and near 0 outside pulling
2-4 gravity wagons.
He used the 986 w/ cab to run augers
Best thing he did was trade the 5020 for
a 3588 (ant-eater).
For the money these are good tractors u see
many of them under 10k and the're over 150 HP
w/ CHA.
Only problem is LOOKS .
COCKSHUTT 1850, 90hp tractor, Perkins engine, power steering, open station, shift over and under, 3 point hitch, $5,500 firm, serious inquiries only, 705-738-6254 Bobcaygeon
$5,000 CDN = $3,410USD... How can you beat that? Oh... by the way... a "Cockshutt" is a Canadian Oliver.
Case-IH Farmall 45A, Kubota M8540 Narrow, New Holland TN 65, Bobcat 331, Ford 1920, 1952 John Deere M, Allis Chalmers B, Bombardier Traxter XT, Massey Harris 81RC and a John Deere 3300 combine, Cub Cadet GT1554
Looks are a matter of opinion. Mine is that the 2+2's were some of the nicest looking machines International built. They are nice machines and I know of a lot of farms still using them so they seem to be holding up quite well. I still hear rumors that CNH is going to release a MX based 2+2 soon. It will be interesting to see what happens with that.
