I've never owned a two wheeled tractor, but I am going to own one soon. I need to expand my garden and I am wondering what the best attachment to use is. I have heard of the rotary plow, rented the tiller, and seen a single bottom plow. Which attachment works best?

I've heard great things about the rotary plow, but if I was able to buy a new BCS I don't think I could justify a tiller, cultivator, and a rotary plow all in the same year. Gravely had a rotary plow too.

I rented a BCS tiller last year and was impressed in the garden, but breaking new ground was tough. (I think it was a bcs 718 with an 18" tiller)

While shopping around I've seen a number of single bottom plow attachments. Do these work well with such a light tractor?

I live in southeastern massachusetts. My garden is located in an established lawn in an old corn field, not many stones. The soil is dark loam with clay.

Is there anything I can do now (before the winter) that will make breaking ground easier with a 2 wheel tractor in 5 months?

Thanks,
Jim

I use a 12" single bottom plow on my TC18 to break ground and then go back with my Gravely tiller. This seems to work well for me.

Reason I asked is, and I got this from the BCS America site, the first model I see with a moldboard plow is the 850 series.

In addition to buying a single axle tractor, I'd could get a SCUT, CUT or older iron this year, but I am at a point in my life where I don't have the money to justify spending on multiple tractors. Plus, I'd rather keep things as simply as I can. I am going to be a one tractor guy for a while (and a walking one at that). I guess there is a possibility that I could rent a tractor during ground breaking season, if there are places around that rent agricultural tractors and implements.

I've seen the implements for these tractors, but I have no experience with this size machine and ground breaking.

If worse comes to worse my father has a homemade tractor that I could try to buy an old 2 bottom plow for....

Thanks

The tiller in my mind would be the most useful attachment to have long term. The other two would make the initial ground breaking job easier to do, but in the long run the tiller will be a better tool to have Get the tiller. Also ould recoend getting at least a model with differential and steering breaks. I beleive the BCS 732 has these.

Also, I see you are in MA. You may want to get in touch with this company OESCO (Orchard Equipment and Supply). I've heard great things about them. They specialize in orchard and garden equipment and are dealers for Goldoni 2 wheel tractors. Goldoni's are super nice machines (a little heavier built than BCS) and since you are fairly local maybe worth checking out. They might even have a rental unit you could use to do the initial ground breaking with and then buy the unit you wish.

Here is their website (check out the Goldoni's under product spotlight):

thanks aesanders,

For once I am lucky to live in massachusetts, the bcs shop is located in massachusetts too.

Goldonis look much tougher than the BCS, but I don't see any mention of prices on the website you linked to. I'll give them a call today.

Thanks.

Yea, I have no idea as to what the Goldini's cost either, but they look good enough to at least check them out.
