Best material to loosen clay for a garden

We are on the Black land parrie with black clay--same basic problem.

We do two things:

1. Organic material, organic material, organic material--it takes a few seasons, but eventually you get great soil

2. Raised bad gardens

gypsum is what is needed first off to get the soil to start to break up and amend, adding compost & organic material is also well & good at all times.

the gypsum (sheet rock will work but pure gypsum in bag or granules is better without the binding agents in the drywall. I added about 4 pickup loads into my 50 x 50 garden when my brother was doing drywall for a living. my supply is gone with him now so hopefully it is just organic composts now.
