Believe it or not the best mower I have ever owned is a 21" Murray. In a pinch, I bought it 5 or 6 years ago at Wal-Mart for $99. It starts on the first pull every time even though I haven't been nice to it. I have never changed the oil, plugs or air filter. I think I might reward it with a little service!

The best mower I ever had was a LawnBoy that I bought used in 1971. I gave it to a relative when I sold the house to become a full time RVer in 1989 and it still ran like new at that time. But that was back when LawnBoy was owned by OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) and was a 2-stroke engine. If I remember right (wouldn't necessarily bet on it) the new LawnBoy at that time retailed for about $250 and the one I bought was supposedly one or two years old so I gave half that for it. It took very little effort to pull the starter rope, so even my wife and teenage daughters could use it, and it was a self-propelled bagger.

Now I have a Toro that cost $700 ($755 with tax), 3-in-one, personal pace, electric start, etc. top of the line walk behind. I really like it, but since it just turned one year old last month, it remains to be seen how long it'll last.

If your asking about ride-on's, my old Yard Pro 42" 14HP Kohler, just gave it to my son-in-law. It is seventeen years old and still going strong and the deck is still as solid as a new one. Mowed 2.5 acres a week for the last 6 or 7 years.

Interesting timing for this question - I have a Craftsman with an 'Eager-1' engine that my wife and I bought for our first house 16 years ago, never took care of it unless you consider keeping it in the garage care. Hadn't used it in a couple of years because it is a push mower (ah-hem, too much work) but my boys asked to use it today, pulled it out, dumped some fresh gas on top of the old, swished around, pumped the primer bulb 10 times, gave it a pull (one pull) and it started up  Still on the original spark plug :)

The best mower I ever had.....hmmm......I think all the ones that started and mowed grass.:D My JX75 is pretty decent. 8 years no troubles but beings it cost more than some riding tractors thats what I expect.

Best rider is by far my Cub 682. Best hand mowers were the old two stroke Lawn Boys. Where other kids had to work crummy part time jobs in burger joints in high school, I made my money back then with Lawn Boys. Two local mower shops used to GIVE me those mowers for free when customers did not want them fixed. 9 times out of ten all they needed was a starter gear, a lower crankshaft seal and the under-deck muffler. $30 for parts, and I'd sell them for $100-150. You simply could not blow those engines up, unless you forgot to mix in the oil LOL! Unfortunately Lawn Boy now is just another cookie cutter MTD product.

When I was young, I remember a couple of boys from school who made extra money from either delivering newspapers or cutting people's lawns. So I bugged my parents into letting me buy a lawnmower. I ended up getting a teeny little huffy 5 horsepower riding mower. I figure, if the boys can cut grass and deliver papers, then so can I. So I delivered newspapers on my bicycle and cut lawns up and down my street on Saturdays on a little blue riding mower that had smaller wheels than my toy wagon. Pretty soon, I had a shiny new bike, my own record player and money in my pockets :). Eventually I had a cart for my tiny tractor and even a snow plow! I was very industrious tomboy LOL! My friends in school were envious, but I did it all with old fashioned hard work.

The best mower I ever had was a 21 inch Snapper push. Used it for 15 years with only normal maintance. It got to the point were the plastic wheels needed to be replaced when the pull start rope broke. I bought a new Snapper and gave the old mower to the two boys across the street. The mower is back in use this summer with new wheels and pull start rope. Saw it last week one of the boys was mowing a lawn making money with the old mower.

Had? Have! I bought a 20" Homelite with an aluminum deck back in 1987. I still use it weekly to trim around the house with. It is so light and a pleasure to use. Shame on me but that spark plug is twenty years old but I do change the oil every spring.
