I am getting ready to try and sow the front yard of my house, which is currently for sale. I want to invest as little as possible, obviously. Just wanting the ground covered.

I have about 60% coverage with a mix of fescue and weeds. The other 40% is bare. I have decided to till the area that is bare, and just use some type of spike harrow to rough up the rest. I plan to lime/fertilize the whole area, then sow. I am planning on covering the tilled area with wheat straw but not the area that is getting overseeded.

Now, my questions.
A- does this plan sound like a good one? Changes?

B- where is the best place to get seed, fertilizer, lime etc.. on the cheap. I am in West TN and have Lowes, Home Depot, WalMart, and a Co-op nearby. Are one of these the way to go, or are there online sources that can beat the others prices despite having to pay shipping?

For info- The whole area of my front yard, that I will be sowing is apx 120'x60'. I plan to sow a 5 seed blend of Fescue, unless someone knows a better route for west TN. Also, the middle 60% of the yard is almost always in the sun, the remaining 40% is about 60/40 shade/sun.

I now always go to the local feed and grain. so I would say your co-op is your best bet. I'd also till the whole thing, and start with a soil test. Deal with the co-op, farm extension, for the best advice to for your area.

I've found the best price for seed at my farm supply store. He has it in bulk, but he also has pure seed. Most of the seed you buy at the box stores is at least half filler material. If you buy a 50 pound sack, you are really buying 25 pounds of seed.

Sometimes I've seen end of season sead for a good price at Sams or Walmart, but you have to know the percentage of seed your buying and the price per pound when shoping around.

I bought two 50 pound sacks of winter rye last fall for $5 each. Then I put them on a shelf and planted them six months later. It came up great!!!!!

Rye grass is the quickest, easiest grass to get started. It doesn't handle the heat very well and is just seasonal her in the South, but if it's just to make it look pretty, then lots of water is all you usually need to get it going.
