Progressive Farmer pick:

No. 1, Barren County, Kentucky
No. 2, Warren County, Pennsylvania
No. 3, Randolph County, Illinois

I'm surprise to see that there still a place in California in the top 10.

Any TBN'er from these places? What do you think is the best rural place to live?

I'll give PA a thumbs up. I'm in Adams county, not Warren but I like it. At least there are no large housing developments around me (yet). Most of the farms that have sold in the past 10-20 years were split up into 5-20 acre lots so there are still lot's of fields and tree's.

I've always wondered about those lists.

For me, it seems that they spread the top locations around the country from coast to coast. I just don't believe this.

I'd be real interested in the criteria and the methodology used to pick these places.

Mornin Tom,
I think that anyone of us that love our rural enviroment, feels that we have our little piece of heaven ! Whether you were born and raised there or just stumbled upon it one day, you were lucky enough to find it in your lifetime ! ;)

I found mine :)

Hi All!

I recently moved to UCLA. That's the Upper Corner of Lower Alabama in case y'all are from California! :D

I did 30 years in CA, both south (San Diego & LA) and north (SF). Retired a few years ago and moved to Alabama. Taxes rate 50th out of the 50 states, land is $1000 to $3000 per acre here in Chambers County. Houses start at $15K and go up to a reasonable max of $250K.

The people are warm, friendly and laid back. Life is slower and a lot more comfortable.

Here (I hope) is a shot of my back yard!

As they say here - "Y'all come, y'hear?"

I hate it when they throw those lists out there. every time they do it seems like eveyone starts moveing to that place. for you guys in Tx that know what Frisco used to be like and what it is now? we moved from the city to what we thought was country but now that they found gas under us the place looks like downtown Fortworth in the cow days. jb

Scotty, You sure got a piece of haven there! Years ago, I started looking for a piece of rural property so that one day, I can go back to live a simple life like I was when I was a child. My criterias were:

1. In a moderate climate with good weather that I can live year round and less depend on modern convenients to keep me comfortable. I can live off the land if I have to...
2. Cheap land that nobody really wants. Usually translates into remote and not feasible for any kind of development. This usually takes care of a bunch of problems that I don't want to deal with. All the negative features of the land from a "normal" person's point of wiew are positive for me. So I can buy land at a small fraction of the cost in the same area and not have to compete people with lots $$$.
3. Low taxes and less government regulations. I want to keep my land with mininum effort in terms of $$$ what it take to just simply "exist" so nobody will take take it away from me.
4. Obviously, a slow and laid back life style with no deadline on anything (except for paying taxes...) Of course, good neighbors and good people in the area.
I think I found mine but still take some time to know for sure...

For everyone else: What are you criterias? Why did you choose your land?
