My engine is completely covered with oil and grease and debris. See the picture below. I need to clean the alternator coils and areas that have non-metal components. All the engine degreasers I've seen say they can only be used on metal and not on wires, plastic, or paint. So what should I use to clean everything?

Wow! Lots to clean, do you know anyone who has a steam jenny, as that would do the job. Of course you would have to cover the area or collect the run off as your steaming engine.

Nope, I don't know of anybody. I live in a rural area and it's a long way to the nearest shop, and I don't exactly get along with the folks there, so I'd rather do it myself.

I like Simple Green but I'm not sure that will handle even your problem!
I've used it many times to clean/degrease engine bays in vehicles. Never had a problem yet.

Brake cleaner such as Brakleen from CRC This stuff is amazing- we use this all the time in an industrial shop with heavy equipment.

Some manufactures of brake cleaner also make clorinated and non clorinated forumlas.

Kitchen dish soap and a pressure washer may work.:D

I have used kerosene in a sprayer, let it sit overnight or at least a couple of hours then pressure wash it. What you miss or is not removed just redo it and wait a little longer then do it again
Just don't have the EPA or environment cops around
I have used this for many years and it is a cheap way to do a tough job

brush, scraper, soap and water and some of the above mentioned degreasers, but be real careful around the wires. Thats one nasty looking grease. Is that normal? Haven't seen something like that in years.

I had a crankshaft oil seal go bad awhile ago, started blowing oil all over towards the end of fall. Also had a mouse make a nest in front of the flywheel screen and another on top of the engine around the carburetor and didn't know before I ran awhile. So it's kind of an oil/grass/mousepoop combination that covers everything. I was also getting a battery charge indicator light before I took it apart even though the battery was fully charged, so I think the alternator wasn't working at full steam because of all this gunk. Think I can just clean it, or will I have to replace it?
