I tried this on the owner and operator forum before I realized there was a forum for lubricants: Has anyone found a good synthetic grease for construction equipment? I've tried mobile, valvoline and amsoil but they're a little pricey. Currently I am using Gulf Super Duty Synthetic EP #2 costing about $4 a tube. Besides lubrication characteristics, I look for extreme pressure and low temperature attributes.

Hi,

You may want to look into either the preferred customer or dealer plan with Amsoil. With those, the price per tube by the case is 3.75.

How does one rate as a perferred customer?

I would take a look to see if john Deere has one. Short of that I would look at their "polyurea" non-synthetic grease, which is their highest grade. It is extra sticky and works well for me.
Mobil One is Ok but seems thin to me.

Any reason you require synthetic? There are conventional base greases that can run circles around most synthetics. When it comes to grease the formulation of the product and it's base carrier means more than the small portion of oil base stock that is in it.

There is no doubt that crankcase synthetic is superior. Are you saying that grease is different? In the northeast termperatures can be as low as 20 below and most synthetic grease forumlas handle this without any problems.

I lived in Northern Maine for 25 years and at that far below zero you should be inside the house looking out. Most equipment won't start and if it did most guys won't venture out. That JD polyurea "best" grease I mentioned sticks like glue and worked when I did. I tried various synthetics and always came back to it except in rare circumstances.
I use Mobil One grease for needle bearings in difficult to repair machinery and it works fine. But it tends to thin out.
Stay inside at those temps and if you do go out most any grease will be stiff enough for protecton until the parts warm up. That's my opinion but it's based on personal experience.

At the factory where I work, we use mobile XHP 222. I do not believe it is synthetic but it is a multi-purpose grease for industrial/automotive. I dont know how much it costs as I just take a tube when I need it which is only once or twice a year. I have been using it for the last few years and I am very satisfied with its performance.

In today's day and age synthetics are not necessarily "superior" for all applications. The only real place synthetics are superior is extreme cold environments, even in the crankcase. Conventional base stocks of today are not your grandfathers oil. Conventional base stocks come darn close to duplicating synthetics properties in every aspect except extreme temperature variations so don't rule out conventional base stocks in any type lubricant.
