Best time(s) to buy a wood stove?

Hello everyone...been quite a while since my lost posting but I do know where to go when I need help and this is the exact place. I did a search on "wood stoves" as I am giving some strong consideration to adding one next year. Rather than hijack the current thread I thought I'd just start a separate one with hopes that it may help someone else in the market.

What I'm wondering is if there is a better time throughout the year to purchase a wood stove? Off-season, end-of-season, start of season??? Are retailers more likely to cut the price at one time of the year over another? Maybe the prices are constant throughout the year, I don't know. Curious as to your buying experiences...

What I have seen in the past as far as price reductions on stoves is from about late winter, end of March to late spring, May or so. Your going to find your local dealer is going to try and get rid of any existing inventory on their floor. This is especially apparent if the distributor wants his floor space for other products that he sells through the remaining part of the year !

I always like to save some money and a wood stove is a good example. People buy these new wood stoves for $2,000 or $3,000 bucks and for whatever reason don't like burning wood, the mess and any other number of reasons and can't wait to sell them for a fraction of what they paid.

You either just missed it or are about to miss it. Lowes and Home depot both clearanced their wood and pellet stoves to make room for the spring stuff. The stoves are not luxury brands but they are quality EPA stoves and decent pellet stoves. Century and Englander brands. Huge discounts like 50% off.

Start checking craigslist daily for woodstoves. I got a Fisher mama bear for $300 and all it needs is some new firebricks. High quality Steel stoves don't really wear out in ones lifetime. Used is fine as long as you know what to look for and avoid.

Real bargains on anything simply fall out of the sky and land on you usually. They just happen... You can't always just pick a spot and go get the very best deal available. BTDT, have less money to prove it. Since winter is (HOPEFULLY) almost over, now would be the best time THIS winter to buy one if you're looking for heat now. If you aren't in a hurry, wait, watch, listen, look, read, and ask. Best buy I ever got on a wood stove was mid-August. Can't hardly GIVE one away then.

There's hundreds of brands. Sometimes the fireplace specialty shops change loyalty from one brand to another. Often they'll unload a "lame duck" model for pennies on the dollar. That's where I stumbled on to mine.

I'd think right about now would be a good time to start looking. I needed one for a house I was working on and got lucky at Tractor Supply. They had two left and both were half off. I forget what I paid, but they were still in the box and brand new.

Years ago when I lived in California, I saw a fireplace insert in a house I was working on. The owner told me that I could have it for free if I removed it. I had three friends help me out becuse it must have weighed 400 pounds.

On a related note, I've noticed that many of you purchased yours right off the shelf at Tractor Supply, etc. Did you do the install yourself? If not, did the retailer make arrangements for installation? I'm not real keen on installing the stove myself without having experience. Kinda reluctant to burn the house down.

Might also want to check with your insurance company and how they feel about wood stoves. Some companies require a professional installation and others will not insure a house with a wood stove. Not the kind of thing you want to find out if you need to fill a claim.

I got a flyer or an email form Clean Burning Catalytic Soapstone Wood Stoves and Soapstone Gas Stoves by Woodstock Soapstone Co. this week or last about a sale. They said they are overstocked due to the mild winter.

I think Mild left the house and Severe has check in.

Anywho, I thought we where going to use the Fireview stove when we built the house but the wife, after years of looking, changed, hmmmm, hmmmm, "our" minds and we went with a different brand.
