Hi all....

Wondering what the best paint would be for my JD770 (JD Green) and the SMC loader (black).??

I have read some of the paints on the market are low quality and fade quickly.

I am going to paint my entire loader this spring in a matte black. Also going to touch up the JD green around the wear marks on the fenders.

So far using a spray can has worked well however, I have a 15 gallon air compressor....should purchase an air gun to paint with.??

Advice is appreciated....

If you want the best match, buy the paint at the Deere dealer. JD, it doesn't look like your paint is weathered at all, so the Deere paint should match quite well.
I've probably still have some left from when I had that 790.
As far as the bucket, I just use green Rustoleam...I'm not worried about the bucket (except for rust).

Roy is right - for the perfect match, get it from the dealer - the spray paint is a very good quality.

However, I've had great success with paint I've bought at Tractor Supply. It is Valspar paint labeled "Tractor & Implement". Very good quality and good coverage. They do have JD green, but never tried it to see if it is a perfect match or not.

I've used the Valspar on implements and trailers, some of which sit outside - still looks great after years.

Of course with any paint job, preparation is the most important.

I picked up some TSC Valspar paint and it is a very good match. It used to be called JD Green but I guess that somebody at Deere didn't like that so it is now called "Tractor Green". I can't speak for the durability just yet, the paint went on Monday.

I too have used the Valspar from TSC. No complaints but I wonder how it will stand up over time.

Preparation is key and I am in the market for a sander. Any suggestions.?? I am thinking like a four and a half inch disc sander or grinder.

Also, how do you sand un-even surfaces or round edge surfaces like a rod.??

Thanks for the replies.

I've painted a lot with acrylic urethanes, 2 stage with clear coats, probably overkill for tractors. A good single stage will work, prep and prime are most important for chemical and mechanical adhesion. A good HVLP gun, and you should probably thro an air dryer/water separator on your line, condensation buildup in the tank will get to the gun, eventually, and ruin your work. Sometimes the investment in all that is needed to do it right cost more than taking it to a paint shop and having them do it.

The JD green spray paint for Tractor Supply is good.

I also like the paint spray cans from TSC.
It seems to be a touch watery but goes on good with many light coats and seems to last.

I recommend you use the New Kubota Orange though. :)

I've yet to see any other paint hold its green color like the JD paint.
For all the work of painting, I don't scrimp and save on paint. A few bucks is not the worth the wasted effort. IMO. :)

Substitute at your own risk. All depends on what makes you the happiest. :)
