So as some of you know I'm looking to get a JD 110, I've found some of the best deals through private sellers, who don't really want a trade and even through a dealer they won't give what it's worth. So I was wondering how all of you sell your machines (besides just CL, eBay). It's practically brand new 2008 3120 with only 154 hours. Got new work so I need something bigger. Haven't put it up anywhere yet but where's the best place? I believe I heard something about being to sell it through a dealer and the buyer being able to use Deere financing but I'd like to check on that as well.

Thanks for the help:thumbsup:

Local tractor dealer has a lot just for stuff sold on commission, always gotta ride by and see what they got...As for financing dont know about JD/Kubota etc.but have local bank financing. Also some of the smaller car lots will sell on commisson. When I sold cple tractors,i always done it on my time and told them before that the price isnt neg. and cash/money orders only.Checks can be cleared threw bank before tractor is taken...

Thanks,

I'll have to stop by and check in with some of the local dealers and see what their commission will be. I may just put them on CL for a good price and ride it out. Don't need anything till spring (though with the weather I'm wondering if it's here:laughing:) so that may be the way I go, just looking to get the most for my money. Hate seeing all of it going to the dealers!

Can take to Auction and put a reserve on it.It will depend if buyer or seller pays sales commission....
Can also put color picture in local papers, color and picture always gets attention

Good luck with CL. You no doubt know it's very spotty, both buying and selling. Also, keep in mind the market for tractors is somewhat seasonal. Spring is the busy season when equipment will usually sell faster or at a better price. Fall and winter are slower... maybe not very many 110's to choose from but you might find a better deal as a buyer. Good luck.

I do have a auction service right next to me. It does specialize in repossessions (hence the name Repo Cast) but they do allow people to sell privately although I'm not sure about reserves. And all auction fee premiums are paid by the buyer, only problem is I've seen items go for half what they are worth so I don't think it would be the best option as I want the most money, if I had to sell it though... Thinking I may try eBay as well.

And I have found the problem to be that the value drops 20% going off the lot, then not so much later as you loose financing but holds value down the road.

Thinking if I'm going to start spending money for adds I'll wait till spring when there will be more buyers

CL worked for me. Of course, most of the calls and lookers were time wasters, bargain hunters, etc. It comes with the territory. No way you can publicly advertise something without this happening.

But.... patience is the key. The right buyer does indeed come along. There are many great, solid, reputable folks who look for late model tractors and have cash ready. Do the best you can to screen the calls, but when you're the salesman, you have to do the work to pocket the commission.

I'd agree that March into May will be prime time.

TractorHouse also has a free listing service. Well worth it.
No way I'd Ebay. The fees would really eat into the margins, but to each his own.

I've sold quite a few tractors, and had the best luck with Ebay. Seems like the more and better quality pics you can post, and very detailed description, and you'll have nationwide buyers. Cost around $200 for a 20K tractor.
As others have said, Craigslist has also been spotty for me.
This time of year is slow, should pick up in a few months. I haven't advertised in a paper or anything other than Ebay and CL for years.
Could also advertise on TBN.....;)

eBay reaches a wide audience but how many will drive half way across the country to pick up a piece of equipment unseen? And when the auction closes you are obligated to complete the purchase even if you don't like the price. Craigslist reaches a wider local audience and is where I would list. And it's free!

Last spring I drove 400 miles each way to buy my Deere 4100 via a Craigslist posting found using searchtempest.com. If, after driving 400 miles, I had found the machine to be not as advertised I would have had no obligation to go through with the transaction and my out-of-pocket costs would have been limited to the 50 gallons of fuel I used (I know, no small cost.)

As I saw your from Michigan also, we have done is put a post in the Michigan farm trader, or in the Michigan auto&rv, sold a lot of heavy equipment within a week, they bring a trailer and cash. Last person came up for our bobcat 751 all the way from Kentucky.

With Craig's List buyers or any buyers for that matter...here are cautions I will pass on...Buy one of those pens that tests bills for counterfeit ..Walmart & Staples sells them..the ones you see clerks marking across the bills you pay with at the register.

As far as accepting a Cashiers check...remember with new quality color scanners all of us have, criminals have them too and can easily go get a cashiers check make some changes in the amount and then scan it and have a new counterfeit cashiers check and you will be out your tractor and the money. I have noticed many ads say...if you are bringing a cashiers check we can go to my bank.Gotta be careful

local want adds.. for sale papers.. or roadside.. etc...

You're in Michigan. Try Kijiji.ca. It's free and is far and away the favourite classified site in Ontario.

Most of my big ticket purchases in the last five years have been of the cross-border variety.

and that's not even safe. many times it can take days to find out a certified check is bad.

a postal money order, at the post office, is about the only way to ensure cash in hand, and no checks..

With so many scams out there, I think going to the buyer's bank, having him withdraw the cash and pay you is the safest. Then you can hide the money in a coffee can until you need it or it is worthless.

Thanks for all the help! Didn't even think to put it in the Canadian listings, thanks RodinForfar! I assume that spring would be the best time to put it up? I really don't want to put the money out there for the adds and it not sell...

RepoCast (Bryon Center MI) is NOT free for the seller. They charge a minimum of $5.00 to list an item (not sure if large items cost more to list) Then they charge the seller a commission starting at 25% and going down the higher the selling price. Not sure how reserves work. They also hit the buyers 10% up to $999 selling price, 6% over $999. You are allowed to bid on your own items, but if no sale, they charge you a $50 buy back fee.
