What's a good stump spray to prevent regrowth & suckers? Will a glyphosohate type spray work on "woody" stuff?

I use Remedy. 3 oz/gal works well here in the south.

2-4-D and diesel 50/50, brush it on.

Glyphosate concentrate 41% applied with a brush, immediately after cutting is very effective. Can be relatively inexpensive, concentrate can be purchased for approx 50$ per 2 1/2 gal if you shop around. A thin layer brushed on is all you need.

I have been using a 50/50 mix of roundup and water and have been getting good results. I use a small pump up hand sprayer to apply it with. Not sure how true this is, but a man told me one time that you need to apply herbicide to the stump it within 30 mins of cutting the tree to get the best results. Dont remember what he was using, but it was not roundup. Had a bluish dye in it so he could tell which stumps he had sprayed.

Here is some data on the prpose of BARK.

What is bark?
A short way beneath the outer surface of a tree’s trunk and branches, there is a layer called the cambium. Each growing season the cambium adds a new layer of cells to the xylem, which it surrounds. The newer xylem or sapwood, transports minerals up the tree from the roots. The older xylem or heartwood, is at the centre of the tree. It is essentially made up of dead cells, and provides much of the strength of the tree. This is all within the cambium. Bark basically consists of the several layers that are outside the cambium. The outer edge of the cambium produces another layer of cells that create phloem, which transports sugars from the leaves to the rest of the tree. Outside that, most trees have a layer known as the cork cambium, which produces the cork – the tough outer layer of the tree. This outer layer is all that we usually see of the bark.

So if you brush Roundup on the Cambium, it should kill the growing cycle.

Also bore about 5 holes in the stump and fill with Roundup of similar product, like vegetation killer, 24D, diesel, etc

I have seen a fence line sprayed with vegetation killer and diesel fuel, and trees about 10 ft from the fence died.

It will depend on the type of tree stump and when you are spraying it. Like Chickengrower pointed out, product needs to be applied within 30 minutes after the cut to be most effective. Glyphosate will not work on some of the tougher stumps that I spray, so I use a mix of Remedy & diesel, or Remedy & cooking oil.

I use glyphosate/roundup (same thing) on tree saplings 10' + and they die. Just spray the recommended amount and it kills just about anything.
