Centurytel finally started offering what SWB has been offering for over 10 years: unlimited long distance calling within the u.s.: for what i consider a fair price: total price $48.80 plus sales tax gets us basic local service, all of the calling features they have, caller id, call waiting, voice mail, etc etc, plus the unlimited long distance: then, for another $30 you get a 1.5M dsl line: ordered it yesterday: the dsl line will be in next week, the phone services started this morning, i've called people i haven't talked to in 6 months!!! oh what will it be like to get off dial up and onto a 1.5M dsl line??? i think it may cut into some of my naps i have been taking while i tried to down load stuff??

I guess maybe I'd better check with them. I'm already spending a fortune with them, since Centurytel is providing our telephone service with more features than we'll ever use, the 750k DSL service ($5 cheaper than the 1.5m so I decided to try it and it's fast enough), and Dish Network satellite TV service, all on one bill. But we don't have the "free" long distance service; just always use the cell phone for any long distance calls, since that doesn't cost us anything.

cell phone and at&t calling card at 4cents a minute is how we have made our long distance calls for years: but this is much better for me..i like the voice mail, it works when we are on the phone and i don't have to mess with an answering machine..3way calling..pretty neat too...i'll spend a lot of time testing all the features

We switched to the Centurytel DSL ( on the phone line ) and love it- put a wireless router in and can run 3 computers at once- it's great.

Centurytel is also my phone company. I recently received a letter from them stating DSL was now available in my area. I called them and representive said yes was available. But not sure on package offers. So waited few days and called back. This rep knew what was available so signed up. And waited for my high speed modem. And waited, till finally I called them back and talked to supervisor who said no, DSL package was not available. What a big letdown, I had dropped my current ISP and had to sweet talk them to get back on. So be careful and don't belive everything you read or hear.

i've been using dialup ever since i got a computer, back in 92 or so: it was with a local co: then when centurytel bought out the local teleco: a year later they bought out the local internet offerer: cswnet: just before they sold out, csw net offered the dialup for $12 a month; and centurytel has honored it ever since: but with unlimited long distance, i could use dialup anywhere, and i have seen it out there for $10: i think the reason centurytel is making these deals now, is the local cable co is getting ready to offer phone service..

"Then confirm with service rep, wait for connection, then cancel other service. "

I know better than to pull the cake out of the oven before it is done. That was my bad. The point I was trying to make was the business ethics on Centurytel's behalf. I can understand one customer rep not knowing for sure on availabilty of DSL. But for the company to send out a letter stating such and then two different reps saying that it is available in my area. Then one signing me up for the service. That just ain't right! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

i agree, centurytel is having some real competition and growing pains aroun Arkansas: the rumor is, the local cable co is getting ready to offer phone service: which will really hurt centurytel: they have had quite a few folks retire, and best i can tell, they haven't replaced anyone: so their service has to be going down.

Bird, centurytel is under a lot of pressure to compete in this area: with the local cable co gearing up to offer phone service, vonage, cell phones plus SWB has been offering this for over 10 years that i know of..
did you check with your local centurytel ??
