According to my wife, it has been 7 years since I stuck 2 chestnut saplings (sticks) in one end of a raised bed to keep them safe till I could plant them. This was to a spring/fall project - according to my wife - for the past 6 years. The bed has 18" or so of top soil. The trees have thrived. The are 6 or seven feet tall now. I think they look great there, but others don't. So I said I'd ask your advice and maybe start this project.
First set of questions -
I'm in central Indiana. Is it too late to plant the trees this fall? We are still in the in drought conditions, but I can haul water. Should this be delayed till spring? (That would be OK by me
)
The trees are side-by-side (I seem to remember maybe only 12-18" apart), so I'm going to be limited on how wide the root ball will be on one side. I haven't measured the drip line. Should I just divide the space and slice down through the roots?
Tractor related questions -
I plan to disassemble the bed frame. I think I can use the BH to remove dirt from one side of the trees. My plan is to drve straight in with the FEL, so I should have a root ball/square 18" deep. Will that be enough or should I dig deeper? I'm hoping the tree will fit nicely in the bucket.
I'll try to take pictures next weekend.
