BH testing by industry

Hi All,

I have made some inquiries on 3 point backhoes and have been told they are tested by the manufacturers to simulate stress etc. Does anyone know if there is an industry standard for this testing?

I was told that some BH's cycle at 30,000 where others cycle at 40K, 60K, 80K and 120K and the higher the number the better the hoe.

Do we have any resident experts that knows how these tests are performed, if there is a standard or just each manufacturer does his own thing?

Just want a bit more education.

What type of test are you talking about? Most manufacturers can do a finite element analysis test within their CAD program that will apply virtual pressures at the stress points to show what can be improved.

I also knew a guy who did R & D up in New Holland on their construction hoes. All they did all day long was dig a hole, fill it in, move tractor & repeat process. Six days a week.

He also fell asleep while driving on the "test track." He woke up before hitting anything, but imagine what a 10-ton tactor could do in low gear if it hit something! But that's a different story...

I'd be surprised if there was an "industrial" standard. SAE/NHTSA and others specify product performance in certain areas (braking, emissions, crashworthiness etc.) but durability/reliability is generally left to the manufacturer. Some may use it as a marketing advantage (imagine the 100,000 mile tire) but most design to product life assumptions that are kept internally.

You're absolutely right, a machine designed and tested to higher duty cycle will last longer but most people don't shop for that as a feature /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just curious as I was told one cycles better than another and wanted to know the relevance of that in real world application. I do not know that industry or their methods testing or standards.

There are alot of industry standards for backhoe testing, and rating. Also for ROPS and a lot of other stuff for backhoes and small tractors. The big but is, you dont have to do a lot of them but if you want to make a public claim relating to some of the standards then you have to do the test. I believe for ROPS to be resold they must be tested on the largest tractor that they are to be installed on in the same manner they are to be installed.
When I get time on Monday, I will try to look up the SAE standards that relate to backhoes. If I remember correctly there are quite a few. There is a SAE standard for skid steer quick attachments, J2513, so there should be a lot for backhoes.

Most SAE standards just cover measurement and test methods. The idea is to be able to compare one model's performance to another. Some will specify minimal performance also, particularly in safety related items like ROPS. For backhoes I believe the standard only covers the measurement methods for depth/force. The manufacturer can design in as much or as little depth/force as they want but at least the "advertised performance" will be comperable if measured to SAE standards.

Think of it as a tire size. There is a standard for a 16" tire bead. You'll know the tire fits by the size but you'll know nothing about the performance of the tire by that number.

In my area, there are a lot SAE standards for various tests/measurements but most of the vehicle performance criteria is covered by FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards). Not sure if there is a similar set of standards for ag/commercial equipment or not /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
