I'm getting ready to build a lean too off my 40x30 barn to park the tractor and the truck. My plains are to build it 40x30. I have acquired (3) 30ft 8in wide flange I beams. I will be using 4x4 1/4 wall posts. I plain on making it a clear span and will be using 8in c perlin on top of the I beams. My ? is the I beam strong enough.

I'm a ca. gen contr. Lots of wind uplift on lean to. Kinda like a wing in the wrong situation. Suggest You find a structual engr. 4x4 sounds light. I'd worry about hitting one post with equept. and eating a roof. I'd go with 4" pipe bolted into conc. footings,at base. Use a simpson bucket on top bolted. Maybe You can locate salvage pipe. In a commercial area ,You may see similar detail that was engineered. This will give Yoy some help. Also consult a good builder in Your area, He may have worked on a similar project. Good luck

My plans are for 4x4 square tubing. I would hope that is strong enough.

I think using three beams to support roof that is 40 feet long is going to be a problem. One at each end, then the third in the middle means your purlins will have to spand 20 feet. From what I've seen, 16 feet is about the max distance for purlins. Have you checked the distance your purlins are rated for?

I use a company called Muellers for metal buildings. They engineer everything and size it for me. Who are you buying your metal from? If it's a metal building company, they should have an engineer in house who can tell you the size and loads of there materials.

I did check about the perlin, and 8in should be more than enough. I called mueller and thats is what they said. I did not ask about the I beam
